KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets. AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

Review that video and use generic 8.1 keys and then use your real windows 8 key and rekey it.

It does not work. Apparently those keys have been blocked.

My key is an OEM key, which was then updated to Pro with a Win 8 to Win 8 Pro Upgrade key, which was then updated to 8.1... I have not yet found a combination of media and key that will talk to each other.

This info has been floating around for some time. It was certainly useful for those who needed install media. The other part of the "trick" was to press the win8 download button, enter your key, start the download, then cancel it at 1%. Following this, press the Win8.1 key which allows you to D/L windows 8.1 installers, which can then be saved to USB or .iso. The flaw being once your W8 key was used for 8.1 it couldn't be used again for a fresh install of W8. But who would want this anyway. If the keys you referenced are "dead" there are likely others available that can be used to get the download, before activating with your own key.

As with "355" its unfortunate MS appears to be unable to help people get the "install media" they need to fix their machines. In an effort to further protect their IP they have also shot themselves in the foot. Helpful of you to post anyway.

You've been great. For those of you still "holding out" for a MS fix, I suggest you take Susan up on her offer, or back up your data like you should have been doing all along and re-install your OS. This was nothing more than an inconvenience. Granted I didn't have to reinstall on any of my machine, but I certainly could have given the number of days I spent troubleshooting. The term cut your losses and move forward applies here.

Or, continue to point fingers at MS, and spend countless more cycles posting what they "should be" or "ought to be doing" to help. The 14th will come and go. If "355" is not installed, you will no longer receive updates. Get past fault, it's not yours, you've done nothing wrong, but accept that this is one of those occasions that isn't going to change unless you take action. Or again, stand by and wait. Please don't be surprised when the 14th comes and goes and your machine is still unpatched.

If you've tried everything and nothings worked.... waiting is not going to solve the problem.

I feel for everyone affected. I was there too.
