KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

    Hi!

    I tried to create System Tools folder as described in MR_CSharp post adding permissions etc. First I created "New folder" and when I tried to rename it "System Tools" I got pop up.

    This destination already contains a folder named "Windows System".

    If any files have the same names, you will be asked if you want to replace those file.

    Do you still want to merge this system

       Windows System

       Date created 22.8.2013 1(:36

    with this one

       New folder

       Date created 4.5.2014 12:10

    If I use cmd and "dos-commands" I can see System Tools -folder under programs.

    Does this tell something to you?

    If you can see both the "Windows System" and the "System Tools" folder within the Programs folder, just proceed past that point without creating the System Tools folder.  I only used the Explorer to view the contents of the system folders in those paths, but explorer might have hidden that "System Tools" folder when I started.  What I did was I copied the "Windows System" folder out onto my desktop initially because when I tried to Ctrl+drag into the same folder area, it wouldn't allow a copy new.  After that I tried to rename the "Windows System" folder within Programs folder, but it doesn't seem to rename the folder.  I even tried to create a new folder called "System Tools" by creating a new folder within Programs and I got the same message as what you got.  So, I just tried creating a new folder inside of Programs and leaving it as "New Folder" and the folder disappeared on me.  So, that led me to believe that I didn't have enough privileges with my "Administrator" account.  I just elevated my account permission to Read/Write and created the "System Tools" folder within the Programs folder.  Then, I reversed the privileges for myself back to the original settings.

    Now, after you mentioned that the "System Tools" appear under DOS Prompt, I just checked and this is the weirdest thing I've seen in Windows.  Since I have set up Explorer to show ALL files including system files, I only see what I believed to be "Windows System" and "System Tools", the latter being the one I created.  However, when I traverse the directories to the "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" area I see "System Tools" and "System Tools - Copy".  The "Windows System" folder is not there!  WTF?!?  I did a "DIR" command for each of the folders and sure enough, the "Windows System" folder does not exist.  Finally, I renamed the "System Tools - Copy" to "Windows System" and both DOS and Explorer shows the same thing.  I think the mappings for the folders in the Programs area are driven from the registry for the Explorer.  The DOS prompt one shows you the exact physical location of the files and folders.

    So, if you see all the necessary folders there, skip step 0 in my original post.

    Congratulations and thank you for posting the news.

    With almost every part of my anatomy crossed I have just forced another update but unfortunately for me it has failed again - not even an option to update and restart.

    I'm beginning to wonder if, within the 'Choose how you want to update' section, I have inadvertently ticked an 'unsuccessfully' button.

    Susan has set up a case for me too but having wasted most of the bank holiday on this they'll have to wait until Tuesday to talk to me.

    it would be good to know if any others fortunes change over the next few hours, because then I might be tempted to have another bash at it.
