KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets. AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

After trying to resolve, I finally bit the bullet, but DID NOT like the option to re-install all applications SO.

This is for a OEM Win 8.1 install with 8.1 OEM Disk

Rather than try the repair option, I selected Install then "Upgrade" which allows keeping all apps and settings (And yes the OEM 8.1 disk allows a Upgrade from 8.1 ->8.1). After completing Upgrade all my apps worked and I then had to redo windows updates. First win updates selected 42 Updates which were downloaded and installed without any fails, when completed I redid check for Updates and there was the dreaded KB2919355 - DOWN LOADED & INSTALLED. This upgrade method took less than a Hour - If I had just tried this after the first DISM repair did NOT work, I would have saved some grey hairs, and @ 71 saving grey hairs can be important LOLs

If you do NOT have the 8.1 disk you should be able to download the ISO and use it with the default Keys. Just google to locate 8.1 iso and then google default windows 8.1 default keys.

I installed 8.1 on my laptop. First I lost my sound. I have managed to fix that. I am not a technological whiz. Now every time I try to watch a news clipping, I just get a blank green screen. I am very frustrated. I have spent too much time on this problem already.

What an epic failure - and I thought that Win 8/8.1 got usable after the first shock...

For myself I decided to use 8.1 without this update and in kiosk mode:
- made all my programs portable (and stored them on a dedicated partition)
- documents where already on a dedicated partition
- updated my system just to the point, where 9219355 is offered, then turned off windows update and the whole security center
- imaged the system partition with clonezilla
...now I use a perfect set up system, a real operating system - which should be the base for productive working with the personal choice of programs, and not like a baby that messes all up when you don't pay attention for some seconds...

I don't need future updates nor anti-virus, when something messes up my system, I simply re-image the perfect system to the system partition (time: 2-3 minutes) and go further with my work.

For me the only way to obtain a trustworthy operating system.
