KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

So, as of 4/19/2014 I am running again.

Fifteen days later, I had to get a copy of Windows 8 Pro retail, and install again with new keys, preserving the settings and data. I had to use the retail keys that came with the media. (Abandoning my upgrade keys.

So effectively, Windows 8.1 Pro on my computer was paid for twice.

Thanks to the PSS people and moderators of this forum for your help. You were extremely professional.

I hope someone is rethinking the main issue this exposed. It is possible for people who legitimately bought upgrades from the Web, to get their machines into a state, through a combination of circumstances for which both the user and Microsoft share some blame, which require the user to have physical media and a key that matches in order to be repaired.

    Michael

That is exactly the reason I suspect a massive class-action suit may (or at least should) be in the offing.  MS owes you a full refund, at the very least.  Any class action attorney looking at this fiasco would be licking his chops right now...  I don't know why it hasn't happened yet, other than Microsoft has been surprisingly successful in keeping all this out of the news.

Speaking of which, I suspect that's why there's been complete radio silence from MS -- the minute they admit they screwed up, all bets are off and they could become liable for untold hundreds of millions of dollars.  For that reason, they never will, and instead they'll blame all the problems on faulty user configurations.  That's also anyone with new out-of-the-box computers (especially the Surface Pro's!) would be well advised to keep detailed records of any problems they have.

In truth, MS should be liable, first for the faulty software but even more - especially in light of their screw-up -for failing to provide iso's for legitimately purchased OS's.

Following several unsuccessful attempts to install the Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based Systems (KB2919355), each of which produced error code 80070002, the following sequence succeeded on my Windows 8.1 Pro (x64) PC.

    1. Verify that Windows Update KB2919442 is installed by examining Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\View update history and, if not, download and install it (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42162)
    2. Download the Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based Systems (KB2919355, published 4/16/2014) (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42335), including all six files:

         Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu

         Windows8.1-KB2932046-x64.msu

         Windows8.1-KB2934018-x64.msu

         Windows8.1-KB2937592-x64.msu

         Windows8.1-KB2938439-x64.msu

         Windows8.1-KB2959977-x64.msu

    1. If it does not already exist, add an empty System Tools folder to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
    2. Run the following command with administrative privileges:

         dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

    1. Reboot PC
    2. Run the following two commands with administrative privileges:

    dism /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

    1. Run the Microsoft Fixit tool for Windows Update (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058)
    2. Select and run “Cleanup system files” by using the Disk Cleanup for Windowsutility (cleanmgr.exe)
    3. Reboot PC
    4. Temporarily disable anti-virus software while executing the following step
    5. Manually install the updates (downloaded in step 2) in the following order:

         KB2919355

         KB2932046

         KB2959977

         KB2937592

         KB2938439

         KB2934018

Thank you to all the prior contributors to this thread, from whom the above amalgamated sequence was developed.

Not a reply but I just found this page from 2 weeks ago while looking for the date when Update 1 will be required to be installed so as to get future updates:

    http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/windows-81-update-required-all-future-win81-updates-released-msdn-239631

Wish I'd seen it sooner but one Notebook without Media Center had no problem but my Desktop with Pro and Media Center did, previously posted my 'fix'.
