WiFi Connection Issues: 5Ghz band not found? How do I determine wifi settings & limitations

Bought a new laptop and have been setting it up with a wifi dual band router.  My issue is that Band A at 2.5Ghz connects anywhere in the house, but the 5Ghz band cannot even be found.  Working the problem with my router settings and support.

Laptop: HP Pavillion TS 15 Notebook 15-n088ca with Windows 8.1 (fully updated) & WiFi

Router: D-Link Wireless AC1000 Dual Band Router DIR-820L with 2.5GHz and 5GHz bands.

The 2.5ghz band is discoverable and connects fine, and works anywhere in the house. The 5GHz Band is not even discovered, doesn't show up on the list. [A new Galaxy Tablet did find the 5GHz Band but was very weak].

How do I find out if there are limitations on my Notebook pc regarding 5GHz bands? Can they be updated? Are there other solutions?

I have been on the Router support site, and one of the issues mentioned was a limitation on the pc to recieve 5GHz. (Which I wish I knew before I bought the router at the same time as the pc)

Any help would be appreciated, Thank You.

Hi Richard,

I have searched for information about the wireless adapter installed in your computer and found that your wireless adapter has 802.11n standard, which supports 5GHz bandwidth.

unfortunately, I was unable to find the Wireless adapter make and model. Let us know the make and model of the Wireless adapter.

While you reply, check if these settings help.

  1. Go to Desktop mode
  2. Select Charms > Settings > PC Info
  3. Click Device Manager (located in the top left of screen)
  4. Click the > sign to expand the Network adapters entry.
  5. Right-click the wireless adapter and click Properties.
  6. Click the Advanced tab, click 802.11n mode, under value Select Enable.

    Just updating the thread..

    if your PC is not able to connect on a 5G connection if you have dual band wireless router, please check with your PC configuration if the network adapter on it is compatible to work with 5G connection

    to do this follow the below steps:

    press the Win+R on the keyboard to open Run box > on run box type the command devmgmt.msc and hit OK > after that look for the network adapter and look for your wireless adapter there > and search on the internet for the details of your wireless adapter

    for me I have realtek rtl8723D which is my wireless adapter, and when checking with the infos of it on the internet and have seen that this is only compatible to work with 2G networks and not with 5G

    Hi Richard, I bought a HP 15-bs070wm I used this 5 times times before I got remote scammed/hacked, I sent it in to a shop they did find any viruses or malware just tracking cookies, 2 days later my Wifi for the 5ghz range starts disconnecting and reconnecting every minute or so, I forgot network and haven't been able to sign into ither 2.4 or 5ghz ranges until I hard reset my laptop this morning, now it see's the 5ghz range (because I told it to) but still wont log in, I can get into the 2.4 though. what's up with this? is it the Driver, Adapter, system or user?

    The wireless adapter on this computer is as follows, I don't see a 5 GHZ adapter:    1707.802.11/b/g/n (2.4Ghz)

    Your original suggestion did not get me to a 5 ghz adapter
