I tried what was recommended and it did not work.  When I had Windows 8, I could defragment my hard drive perfectly with no problems whatsoever, but as soon as I downloaded Windows 8.1 I can no longer defragment my Hard Drive, it simply will not defragment with Windows 8.1. I do not want Windows 8.1 anymore, please tell me how I can go back to Windows 8.  Thank you.

If a program like Norton is the possible cause it may be necessary to uninstall such a program to properly test whether such a program is the cause.

Will the Defrag work if you enable the built-in Administrator and run it via that user?

This EXAMPLE (ONLY) might or might not work for you with your Defrag program it uses the built-in Administrator account to perform it?

"It seems that the "Run as administrator" command only gives you some administrative privileges, and they're not enough to install Java (and OpenOffice, by association). In order to get around this, you need to actually log into the built-in administrator.   Open a Command Prompt (Admin) with admin rights by  using the Windows Key + X and selecting that option.   At the prompt, type:

net user administrator /active:yes

Then log out of your regular account and back in as the built-in administrator, where you might be able to install the update.  When you're done, log back into your regular account and, for security purposes, disable the built-in administrator account using:

net user administrator /active:no "

I have the same issue. I have performed all suggested actions - but not luck. My C drive continuous to report 14% fragmentation.

The strange thing is that I used third party defragmentation software, which performed defragmentation and drive optimization reporting 0% fragmentation, BUT windows still reports 14% fragmentation! I don't understand!

I recently downloaded Windows 8.1 and now I cannot defragment/optimize my hard disk/OS C:

drive. I click on Optimize and nothing happens, and my hard disk keeps getting more and more fragmented as I save stuff on my computer. How can I get my defragment/optimize to work and defragment my hard disk? Thank you.
