I've just updated to 8.1 and am now getting notification that "...\System\SysMenu.dll The specified module could not be found." I'm not finding anything on the internet about this. Is this a known issue or did I just inform you?

Help is appreciated.

Microsoft technical support have solved this problem for me. I'm not sure what they did as they logged in remotely to my computer. But if you are having this problem as well it might be worth giving them a call :)

Hi Kim,

Here is the solution:

1st: Download Auto Runs.

http://download.sysinternals.com/files/Autoruns.zip

Link basis: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

2nd: Find the yellow highlighted Image Paths that ends with sysmenu.dll. Usually you can locate those image paths from Scheduled Task.

3rd: Right click then delete.

4th: Try to find all yellow highlighted Image Paths that ends with sysmenu.dll from "Everything tabs, delete them.

NOTE: Carefully choose image paths that ends sysmenu.dll only, if you deleted paths that are not high lightened then it might cause some trouble booting your PC.

5th: Reboot Computer

6th: Wait at least 5 minutes to confirm that the issue has been resolved. (sysmenu.dll usually appears within a minute from rebooting the computer. )

Hope it helps :)

Hi Valentina,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

I would require more information to help you better.

1. Are you facing the same issue?

2. Did you make any changes prior to this issue?

This issue occurs if the system file is corrupted or damaged.

I would suggest you to run System File Checker.

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833?wa=wsignin1.0

I would also suggest you to Run DISM or System Update Readiness tool

Windows corruption errors may prevent Windows updates and service packs from installing. For example, an update might not install if a system file is damaged. The DISM or System Update Readiness tool may help you to fix some Windows corruption errors.

Let us know the status of the issue we will be glad to help you further.

What ever it is I have no clue but I had that error and a couple others from deleted malware and finally found the easy way to stop the error messages from appearing.

1). Go online and search for Microsoft Autoruns software. It's a free utility by Microsoft that finds all the items loaded during start up (that's what I was told). Download it.

2). Click on 'Run' so it opens and runs the software. You will see a list of line items. The line in yellow are the ones that did not run due to some sort of error. Your "\System\SysMenu.dll The specified module could not be found" should on the list and highlighted in yellow. It did not run because it could not be found.

3). Now open 'file' and at the upper left. Click on 'Run as Administrator'. It will rerun and give the same results. Difference is now you have the ability to can go to all the yellow highlighted lines and unclick the check mark so they will not try to run them next time you start the computer. You can also delete them by right clicking on them and selecting delete. I just unclicked them.

4). Close it out and no more error message when you start your PC as it won't try to look for this item that does not exist to include in the start up.

I added this Autoruns to my lower task bar for future access.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

From the description, I understand that your computer randomly shutdown.

I would require more information to help you better.

    1. Does it shut down during any particular activity on the computer?
    2. What is the make and model of the computer?
    3. Do you get any error message/code?
    4. Have you made any changes to the computer prior to this issue?

I would recommend you to follow the below given methods and check if it fixes the issue.

Method 1: Run System Maintenance Troubleshooter

    a. Press Windows+R and type Troubleshooting.

    b. Select Troubleshooting.

    c. Select view all on the top left corner.

    d. Run System Maintenance Troubleshooter.

Method 2: Check in Safe Mode

Safe Mode is useful for troubleshooting problems with programs and drivers that might not start correctly or that might prevent Windows from starting correctly. If a problem doesn't reappear when you start in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and basic device drivers as possible causes. If a recently installed program, device, or driver prevents Windows from running correctly, you can start your computer in safe mode and then remove the program that's causing the problem. For more information about troubleshooting problems in safe mode

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-safe-mode

Hope this information helps and let us know the status of the issue we will be glad to help you further.

    Thanks.
