Have tried every method I can find on the internet to install the dreaded 8.1 update (KB2919355) but every time it fails to configure and returns to previous setting. Totally frustrating! Surely Microsoft can produce an update that does not generate such a mess. I await 'another' patch ed update!!!

I went back to factory specks using Windows 8 DVD which I made when I first got my computer. And as far as my Refresh & Reset are concerned I replaced the wiped out drive with a custom Refresh image and a complete system Image no problem there and something any user can do. When you say the latest, what KB articles does it say failed? Is there a store icon on your system tray?

Just a comment. I don't personally have this issue but did a Factory Restore taking me back to Windows 8.0, then upgraded to 8.0 Pro w/media Center last night. When I upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro w/media Center Both Window8.1 Pro and Windows 8.1 update were installed together. This may prove to be a work around for some of you. What about 8.0 install media as /source: and no /limitaccess? Would that be enough to let your key be recognized and still get your free updates? I.e. with no /limitaccess supposedly WU would find the right stuff to give you instead of the old stuff that you were pointing to. <eg> @Robert, I expect this would revert me back to Win 8, requiring an upgrade to Win 8.1 and then the Win 8.1 Update. . I would be more hopeful but I don't know what it would do. I really should set up a VM so I can be less speculative. <eg>
