I came up with a solution that worked for me. I disabled automatic updates and system restore. Not sure if it was necessary, but that was my first step. I then installed each update individually. When I would come to one that wouldn't install, I waited for the reboot and roll back and then went to the next until I finally had 2 critical and one optional that would not install.
On the ones that would not install I downloaded the installer via "more information" link and manually installed each of them, restarting between installs.
I then rebooted and checked for more updates. It found a couple. I let windows update install them and now it appears I have the problem licked.
I hope this helps someone.
