Chrome and Firefox browsers not compatible with Windows 8.1 update

I have just installed the new windows 8.1 update today (18th October) and found that both chrome and firefox do not work. (I had the latest versions installed which worked fine with windows 8.) I've even tried installing chrome 4.1 beta and the "unstable" chrome 5... I've made sure that they (chrome and firefox) are 'allowed' through the firewall, but still can't get them to work. Both web browsers open and look like they're working, but when I try to open a website chrome says it can't connect to the internet and firefox just remains on the start page. I know my internet works fine as internet explorer works and so does the app store. Any help on this would be appreciated! Thank you

There's a solution by ianself on mozilla's support forum and it worked for me! It fixed both my chrome and firefox browsers.

  1. Type "cmd.exe" into Search and then right-click on Command Prompt****to select 'Run as administrator'
  2. Type "netsh winsock reset" into Command Prompt, and then press Enter
  3. Restart PC

Perhaps 8.1 wiped the network settings when it installed then when it tried to get them from the router it was wrong and so we got those internet connection issues. Good luck all!

As I indicated in the post above, if you are with Telstra then this is a known firmware issue with their Technicolor modem/router. 8.1 did not "wipe" your network settings, but auto DNS settings (which is what's recommended) no longer function properly with this device post 8.1 upgrade. Your techie has simply put Telstra fixed DNS settings on your PC, which is the sort term workaround. Telstra has promised upgrade firmware for the modem/router within the week.

We installed 8.1 on both of our desktops and IE, chrome and firefox were not working or displaying correctly. Connection to the internet became intermittent despite all other devices in our home connecting fine. A tech friend of ours tried all of the suggested fixes and even uninstalled McAfees but nothing helped. He problem solved that it was a DNS issue because of the intermittent connection. He looked up our internet service provider's primary and secondary DNS numbers ( Telstra) and the secondary one did not match what was in our router settings. He went into control panel network settings and hardcoded the correct DNS from Telstra and everything worked great!

Perhaps 8.1 wiped the network settings when it installed then when it tried to get them from the router it was wrong and so we got those internet connection issues. Good luck all!

The Winsock Reset improved, but did not fix the problem for me.

However, below will address the issue for some sufferers:

If you upgrade to Windows 8.1 (probably if you are a nerd like me!) and if Bigpond is your ISP and if you have their Technicolor Modem/Router then you'll be experiencing major access difficulties.

This Fault is known and identified modem/router issue and Bigpond are working on a Firmware fix for their Tecnicolor Modem/Router.

In the meantime you can find the workaround at:
