Getting error code 0x800701E3 when copying files from laptop to external hard disk

Original title: error 0x800701E3

I have this WD ext hard drive 300 gb for pat 3 years. recently I am getting the above error message whenever I try to copy or send files from laptop to external hard drive. I tried different USB ports on laptop with same error message coming up. I ran chkdsk from laptop on the external drive but the problem persists. I backed up the files from the ext hard drive and formatted the drive. but no success. any suggestions to rectify the problem? thanks

Hi Mirle,

What was the exact scan report that was generated after you ran the ‘Error check’?

Did it provide you an option to delete the files that couldn’t be recovered?

It appears that Windows has tried to recover some of the files in the bad sectors. If they are corrupt and beyond repair, then Windows might fail to open the file or delete it. If you are unable to delete these files, then you can copy the other files to a different location, format the external drive completely to remove all corrupt files, and then copy the other files back to the External hard drive. Right click on the External hard drive in File Explorer and select ‘format’ to format the drive.

    Hello JeanetteHarlow, thanks for conscice explanation and to tell you that I have the same exact problem except I can not back up anything and my laptop is an old Acer Aspire 2009 full to brim and my passport is one terra(I am not sure about the spelling) and I also have disk 100% problem ; Unfortunately no one has been able to help me I have even gone to Answer Desk and they were kind enough to look into it by entering my laptop but to no avail. But , hey do not loose hope , do not despair I am sure someone soon will come up with an answer. Adios Amigos .

    I too had this error code when trying to make a Windows 10 System Image Disc on an External Hard Drive.  I fought with it for several days but nothing seemed to fix it.  Then I decided to do a scan and repair of my C: drive (where Win 10 had just done an automatic update).  That scan and repair took several hours to complete,  When it was all done, I restarted my computer and again tried to make a System Image on the external hard drive that had failed so many times.  VOILA!  I now have a saved System Image on an external Hard Drive!!

    It appears that there must have been damaged files on my C: drive that caused the fail for so many times.   Doing the scan and repair of the C: drive using the cmd admin function did the trick.  Whew!  Several days of lost sleep over that one!

    Thank you so much for replying with the updates.

    The Error Code: 0x800701E3 could be because the device has malfunctioned during file transfer process. Please let’s know if you have tried updating the chipset drivers on the computer as suggested in the previous post by the Microsoft Engineer “Jessen P”.

    It would be great if you can copy and paste the information logged in the Event Viewer. You need to open the event related to the error from the Event Viewer and then copy and paste the details in your reply, so that we can have a look at it to identify the root cause of the issue.

    Please get back to us with the additional information regarding this error.
