Hi All,
I have an issue with windows 8.1 of which I would like someone to shed some light on for me.
The issue I am having is that every so often since upgrading 8.1 last night it keeps locking up on me for no apparent reason resulting in a a restart by the reset switch, and this never happened with windows 8 but it is annoying how 8.1 is now doing it.
Can anyone help? as I am seriously debating downgrading from windows 8.1 back to 8 as I don't want a system that locks up on me and is unstable all the time due to using my computer to do coursework for college and can't afford to lose any work that has not been saved.

since I've done that trick I found the system has been running great. I'll repeat it here and then try to scatter it into other replies. People should be made aware of this trick. Go into Task Manager. Right click on Windows Explorer. Click "restart"... then restart your PC... the PC will take awhile to reboot... the Windows system must be "reinstalling" or something.... this reset everything very well, for me....
It is odd that you couldn't run dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthhere is a link to the scanner http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx If it doesn't work you can search Bing for Microsoft security scanner
Did it give you an error? Maybe it was typed in wrong or you weren't running command prompt as admin. You can copy from here and right click then select paste in the command prompt.
Does dism /online cleanup-image /checkhealth or dism /online cleanup-image /scanhealth run.
One of those will scan the computer for issues and report back if there is anything to fix. The other will the registry and other places to see if Windows set flags which is just its way of marking that there is an issue that needs repaired.
None will try and fix anything but they should run.
I ran "netsh winsock reset" once on Jan 4th. My Win 8.1 freezes once or twice EVERY DAY without fail on either Microsoft Excel or Internet Explorer. Sometimes on Wordament (X-Box Live).
Chosen solution
- Run cmd.exe as an administrator
- Type "netsh winsock reset", and then press enter
- Restart PC
My computer would normally freeze up 3-4 a day. Since I applied the above solution my computer has been running normal for about 24 hours now.

Hi! Freezes can have a lot of reasons.
My FIX here is for freezes who does´nt have any effect on the task Manager! Thats crazy - random freezes on Internet apps - all but Microsoft - thats crazy too!
It resets (Firewall?!) Network Settings to win8.1 Default. Thats something updaters never had - and thats the reason for random freezes on apps like Firefox, steam or other Internet apps..
So it´s a fix for all they had 3rd Party Firewalls or Antivirus installed before win8.1 update!!!
My computer has finally started freezing up again. I can run "netsh winsock reset" and it will not freeze again for days. I am now convinced that it does not make any difference what program, brower, or software you are running it will freeze for no apparent reason. I have not had this problem when running Windows 8.0. Windows 8.1 is not stable and since it does not leave any tracks on what is causing it when it freezes it will take MS a long time to figure this out. I have now installed Windows 8.1 on another computer and it now has started the freeze problem and it has never had freeze problem running Windows 8.0 for about 11 months.
It appears that they are more than one type of freeze problem from reading other post here and other web sites. Maybe the reason for not charging to upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1. So I guess will just put up with this pain until it is fixed and if it get worse then I will go back to Windows 8.0 or Windows 7.0.
I have the same problem while browsing in Chrome. I upgraded from Windows 7 to 8.1 and have been very disappointed with the frequent freezing problem. I am using an SSD as my boot drive and it still has the freezing problem. I usually happens when I have more than 5 tabs open in the browser and particularly when I put in to many mouse commands to the browser. It will hang for a fairly long duration (1-2 minutes) then flash through the commands and return to normal.
I hope the service pack will address this problem.
