"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Well I finally gave up and wiped my hard drive  and reinstalled win 8 then the  updates , then loaded win 8.1 all installed ok.  so dam frustrating to have to do this.

I did not  change my hardware configuration  just did a wipe and a clean install I did not load any apps or programs  just the windows updates so it looks like drivers or software, well for me anyway.

so good luck all and  Microsoft you should be ashamed of this product roll out

How did you determine that was your problem?  Did you look at certain log files?  Or was it trial and error?

The thing is what it boils down to it is not a hardware problem it the software and we are all looking of a problem which is not there, bad programming.

I have the Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn Wi-Fi adapter. This is what was causing this issue when attempting to upgrade to Windows 8.1. The only way to resolve the issue was to take off the case, unscrew and manually remove the chip from the motherboard, and then the upgrade went off without any issues. Afterwards, I attempted to re-connect the chip and Windows 8.1 kept failing even when going into safe mode and upgrading to the latest version from HP's website for Windows 8.1. For right now, it seems that the only acceptable option for using Windows 8.1 is to not use the Ralink Wi-Fi chip.

Hopefully there will be a fix for this soon.

    Thanks,

    Jason

I agree with you, Microsoft is not addressing this problem at all. A lot of us are "hardcore" PC users, we are your most loyal customers and you are treating us like dirt. A update of how the problem is being fixed would be nice or any posts from MS employees. Hopefully someone at Microsoft reads this and acts upon it. If someone at Engadget, Verge, Maximum PC or any media outlet see's this please help us out and contact MS about this issue. If they won't listen to us hopefully they will listen to you.
