"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Similar trouble here. Got the 0xc1900101 - 0x40019. Using a Lenovo Yoga 13. Running Kaspersky Antivirus 2013. Not too much else on the new machine: Office 2007, Chrome, Firefox, Adobe Acrobat Standard XI.

This is getting absolutely ridiculous, it's been over a month, this thread has 30,000 views, and is now 47 pages long.  When the h&ll is M$ going to fix this?  Is it that hard to write to a log when it determine it needs to terminate the upgrade? (Or how about writing to one log, not 12 logs so you easily determine why it fails?  AGH!

I, too, have tried all the suggestions including the "clean" install, hardware, updated drivers and the ISO. None of these worked and still return the 0x40017 error.

I think people suggesting doing clean installs should put in the caveat that you probably will lose data and have to reinstall all your applications. I think it's unacceptable to "upgrade" to 8.1 and have to go through all of these steps -- moreover, none of them work all the time for all of us. I agree -- a "few days" for a solution is a joke. I think they just want us complainers to all go away (or, delete our messages as they have before).

What an inferior move and lack of humility for its customers for Microsoft to ignore these problems. I'm sticking with an inferior 8.0 -- I think even all these upgrade attempts on my laptop have left me with some sort of weird hybrid 8.0/8.1 OS. It has done odd things since "recovering" my installation such as a different start-up prompt, forgetting all my wireless networks and general OS malaise unlike before.

It states on this link you have above that "you can update to Windows 8.1 in the Windows Store for free" but not on the link so it don't work.
