"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I really appologize for the delay in responding to this thread. This issue is caused by a driver bug check during second boot while installing Windows 8.1. I request you to check if all the updates are installed on the computer via Windows Update before you start with the Windows 8.1 installation. It would be great if you can provide more information regarding this issue:

1)       What is the make and model of the computer?

2)       Do you have any external devices (except the mouse and the keyboard) connected to the computer?

3)       Are you using any third party security program installed on the computer?

You may try the following methods and check if that helps.

Method 1: Disconnect all the unnecessary external devices connected to the computer (except the mouse and the keyboard)

Please disconnect all the unnecessary external devices connected to the computer (except the mouse and the keyboard) and then check if you still face this issue while installing Windows 8.1. This is to check if the issue is caused by any external devices connected to the computer.

You may also try installing all the driver updates for all the devices installed on the computer and check if that resolves the issue. You may try the next methods and let’s know the result.

Method 2: Update the Device Drivers on the Computer.

Step 1: Check the Windows updates for any latest driver updates.

Check in Windows updates if any driver updates are available. If so, install the same and check if it helps.

a)       Press “Windows Logo” + “W” keys from the keyboard.

b)       Type “Updates” in the search bar and click on “Install optional updates” from the left pane.

c)       From the “Windows Update” window, click on “Check for Updates” on the top left corner, to receive a fresh list of updates and then install all the updates listed there.

If no driver updates are available via Windows Update, then you may install them for all the devices on the computer from the Computer Manufacturer’s website.

Step 2: Update Driver Software from the Manufacturer’s website:

Go to the computer manufacturer’s website and search for the latest Windows 8 drivers available for all the devices on the computer and then install them by following the instructions given in the website.

I have the same problem but the reason I can't update is because my win8 is an enterprise or volume licensed version, which is wrong cuz we were given this license from MS due to a problem with our license issue problem when we bought our comp it had a prob and MS with the license. That's a  whole different issue to much to delve into here.  but now I can't update to win 8.1 which prevents me from getting the free win10.  my wife get win10 cuz she has win7.   How do I get this resolved?  I can provide some more info on licensing problem if needed but a lot of it was done via phone so there aren't much docs unless MS has it.  But my Dell comp guy, Marco was involved.

I FINALLY SOLVED IT!!

After nearly 2 years of headache I finally got it through without resetting the system (by the way thank you MS for doing nothing)

It's basically some kind of conflict between the upgrade and your sata driver, all you need to do is set your sata driver from AHCI to IDE before upgrading to 8.1, but switch from AHCI to IDE in Windows 8 takes bit of a hassle.

I believe it will solve 0x40017 which bothers you for so long, and don't forget to switch back to AHCI after the 8.1 upgrade is done, good luck!

I checked setupact.log and found the code 0x40017 at the very end of this large file, but I don't have a clue where to look for the error, I search 'error' through the log file couldn't find anything interesting.

now I wonder how can I send this file to Microsoft.

I too have a P9X79 Deluxe motherboard.  I was finally able to install 8.1 from a complete reinstall of Windows 8.0, something I was resisting for a long time.  My point though is I reinstalled with whatever Version 8 had to offer in drivers - non of my own Asus, NVIDIA, Intel, etc. drivers were used.  I also disconnected all non-essential peripherals before the reinstall.  Once Win 8 was reinstalled, I installed 8.1 (as an update) without a problem. I then hooked up all left-out peripherals and installed all my own drivers.

I agree, its a pain, especially when you have a boat load of programs that have to be reinstalled afterward, but there is something to be said about unloading accumulated junk and non-essentials.

Anyway its over for now and it worked.  Hope this gives you hope.  Until next time.

I don't understand why it shows the mouse cursor twice during the upgrade process (each before a reboot).

That could be a clue.  Do you have Touch?  You wouldn't need your mouse then.  In fact, I'm not sure but you might not need it at all anyway, especially if you can get Mousekeys working and have a full keyboard (or at least a real Numeric keypad) to run it.  Or if you have another mouse you could try using it instead.

BTW you may find some easier to interpret clues in the *.log files in that same Panther directory.
