Windows 8.1 error: "thread stuck in device driver"

After installing the Windows 8.1 update without issue, every time I turn on my computer a screen appears that saying that there was an error when the last session ended, and that the issue pertains to "thread_stuck_in_device_driver". This has occurred every time for the last 6 days, and I have used system restore and Windows Update and the issue still remains. Has anyone found a solution to a similar problem?

Thanks, Jarred

The Dell support page offers a few things to check, but says if all else fails, replace the video card.

Maybe replacing the video card is worth it to get rid of all the headaches.

THREAD STUCK IN DEVICE DRIVER

This Blue Screen error indicates that a device driver-almost always a video card driver-is stuck waiting for something (usually a hardware operation) to happen. Most of you have probably seennv4_disp.sys associated with this Blue Screen.

  1. Ensure the video drivers are updated to the latest Dell version.
  2. The system BIOS is fully up-to-date.
  3. If both the video driver and the system BIOS are fully up-to-date, check with the manufacturer for recent driver updates.
  4. As a last resort, try exchanging the video card.

Note: Reinstalling Windows is not likely to prevent this error from reoccurring.

    Hi Microsoft

Thanks to Microsoft having the default setting of auto updating turned on, which i was unaware of, i have had the displeasure of having my Windows upgraded to 8.1 which i have to say is a totally awful product/upgrade.

    1.  Everytime i turn my computer (Dell Inspiron laptop) i get the Thread_In_The_Devise_Driver error message.
    2. My computer now runs horrifically slowly.
    3. Windows 8.1 is worse that Windows 8 (which wasn't good anyway).
    4. When i want onto the Microsoft website to find support for the 8.1 upgrade, your own link took me to a page stating "page could not be found".

So to summarise, not only have Microsoft once again totally ruined my computer, there's no easy way to get support.

How do you intend to fix this problem?  I don't want to spend hours downloading drives which may or may not work.  I want Microsoft to issue a patch to fix this problem.  You broke it, you fix it!

I will be sure to NEVER purchase ANY Microsoft/Windows products ever again!

    Regards

A very unhappy users of your awful products.

I have done same what you have done..... Guess what it's worked like a charm.

Thanks a million for all the links. because I had installed 8.1 four times and called Dell Support and Microsoft support and they couldn't resolve it.  SO I had to revert back to Window 8.

But couple of days ago 8.1 installed and got same error again. I did same as you said and my computer is super fast than it was in Window 8. I can see the difference. Thanks a Billion.... :)

I was having the exact same problem, it's been frustrating me for a long time now.

I seem to have fixed it tonight by downloading the program in the following link:

    http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

I had downloaded a few other driver updates which didn't make a difference however I can't rule out one of these in combination with above link was the solution.
