Windows 8.1 error: "thread stuck in device driver"

After installing the Windows 8.1 update without issue, every time I turn on my computer a screen appears that saying that there was an error when the last session ended, and that the issue pertains to "thread_stuck_in_device_driver". This has occurred every time for the last 6 days, and I have used system restore and Windows Update and the issue still remains. Has anyone found a solution to a similar problem?

Thanks, Jarred

The Dell support page offers a few things to check, but says if all else fails, replace the video card.

Maybe replacing the video card is worth it to get rid of all the headaches.

THREAD STUCK IN DEVICE DRIVER

This Blue Screen error indicates that a device driver-almost always a video card driver-is stuck waiting for something (usually a hardware operation) to happen. Most of you have probably seennv4_disp.sys associated with this Blue Screen.

  1. Ensure the video drivers are updated to the latest Dell version.
  2. The system BIOS is fully up-to-date.
  3. If both the video driver and the system BIOS are fully up-to-date, check with the manufacturer for recent driver updates.
  4. As a last resort, try exchanging the video card.

Note: Reinstalling Windows is not likely to prevent this error from reoccurring.

    Hi All,

I've had this problem since February 2014 when I upgraded to Win8.1. However, I now believe it is not directly related to Windows (Microsoft), it is the Dell system.

Why? - Because I've applied most of the fixes suggested on this forum, and rolled back to Windows 8, but still the issue persists - I have now had a total of 6 'blue screen' boots!

But have found that the boot is actually happening, just that the monitor is not responding. If I plug in an external monitor I find the complete Windows system operational on that, but laptop screen is blank. Then disable (or better, uninstall) the AMD driver, unplug the external monitor, and restart. Presto  - laptop screen all happy with Windows all working! You can then plug in the external monitor again and everything works fine (for a few days, then it all happens again!).

I believe there is some conflict with the AMD card and the Intel graphics, and something (auto update, random registry entries etc) causes the inbuilt monitor to stall. It may also have something to do with the WiDi driver for the laptop monitor. The association with the Win 8.1 'upgrade' may be because of some graphics update or reconfig. that comes with the Windows install.

Bottom line - I've told Dell I want a complete refund because this machine is faulty, and despite numerous reports (like this forum thread) of the problem associated with exactly the same spec laptop, they have done nothing to resolve. Oh, and also, that I will never buy a Dell again!

    Cheers, I'm outa here.
