Windows 8.1: System Image Backup of C: drive fails, Error 0x8078012D and 0x8007045D

Hello everyone.

I've a lot of people encounter problems similar to this, but here is my particular flavour:

I have a Windows 8.1. Pro (64 bit) desktop PC.

I am trying to use File History > System Image Backup to create a backup image of my C: drive.

I have been trying to save the backup both an external USB 3.0 drive, and this time to a network location (on a WD 'MyCloud' EX4 NAS)

Every time, the backup fails about 3/4 of the way through.

I get an error dialog saying

"The backup failed.  The operation failed due to a device error encountered either with the source or the destination. If the source or destination volume is on a disk, run CHKDSK /R on the source or destination volume, and then retry the operation. (0x8078012D)Additional Information: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. (0x8007045D)"

I've spent many hours diligently running CHKDSK /R  both on my C:\ and the destination drives, and it has never once found any problems.

I've tried closing all applications, unnecessary services, background processes and disabling Windows Defender's real time malware checking whilst the backup takes place, but that doesn't seem to fix anything.

My hunch is that there's nothing wrong with the disks or hardware at all, and that this is some kind of obscure permissions problem, where Windows can't access symbolic links on my C: drive.

But I basically haven't a clue! :) 

I'd be very grateful for any suggestions at fixing this, as currently I don't have any backup image of my C:\ drive, so if my PC goes kaputt, I'll have days of manual re-installing and configuring to do.

    Well all my source and destination partitions are NTFS, so I think you're on a red herring with this one!

    I have some further information that might help in resolving the problem making a System Image Backup.

    I also have a related question as follows:  The first partition I have, "EFI System Partition", as I have read is typically a FAT32 partition, yet the System Image backup is attempting to store this partition on a NTFS formatted USB drive.  Is there an incompatibility problem?  The System Image Backup does not give the option to delete any of the three partitions it selects by default.

    The first time I try to perform the System Image Backup on a freshly formatted and empty 3TB USB drive I get the following screen:

    Even though it states that the specified backup disk cannot be found, the backup drive has a folder labelled "WindowsImageBackup" and several underlying folders created on the backup drive.

    Attempting to perform the System Image Backup again provides the following screen:

    I have also attempted to perform the backup using "Windows PowerShell" which also fails.  Below is the window when attempting the backup using the command line.:

    I too am experiencing a failure trying to do a System Image Backup with Windows 8. 1.

    I have a newer computer (Nov. of 2013) that came with Windows 8, which I have upgraded to Windows 8.1.

    I get the following error messages 0x807800C5 & 0x8078004F upon failure which is typically several minutes after initiating the System Image Backup.

    I have tried all three Methods that you suggest, including the Clean boot, without any resolution.

    I have tried two separate USB backup drives, one with over 2 TB of free space and the other with 680GB free.  The System Image Backup is supposed to take about 324GB according the System Image Backup prompts.

    I am accessing the System Image Backup by going to the Control Panel, selecting File History, and then selecting System Image Backup.

    Any further help you can provide regarding the System Image Backup failure will be appreciated.

    Well, it took a while, but I finally got the free "Macrium Reflect" utility, and tried to use that the make a system image of my C: drive.

    That failed too! Also giving an "I/O error"! ARRRGH.

    It turns out that Macrium just uses Microsoft's VSS service the same as the Control Panel File History utility anyway! And Macrium's help forum's explained the I/O error was coming from Windows. So really, it's just another front end for the same process, so I guess it's not surprising it failed too.

    I ran CHKDSK /R on my C drive *again*, and it didn't find any errors AGAIN, so I really cannot see that there is a real problem with the drive. I still suspect the encryption.

    (But really - if the VSS service doesn't support file encryption, shouldn't this be documented somewhere?)
