I have just waded through all of those updates 1 at a time and if you un-install KB2917929 it will solve the problem. Believe it or not Microsoft call it a compatibility update!!!!

I have the same problem. I updated to 8.1 and adobe acrobat 7 worked fine. After the most recent update was installed, I get the same application error message. WHY???

I tried running all the compatibility modes from windows 8 to windows XP and none of them work, still getting the same message. Even removed adobe and all adobe products and re-installed Acrobat Pro and even tried Standard but none of them work.

for lder version of Acrobat, you can give it a try by right click the desktop icon for Acrobat 7.0 pro and choose the option compatibility troubleshoot. Follow the onscreen instruction and see if this option works fine for you..............

This reply does not deal with the security issues from another poster. I do not have any information that confirms that issue or not. If you are like me, you are one of the many who gut sucked into the Windows 8 (and then 8.1) upgrade from Windows 7 and can not go backwards. I have tried - it just doesn't work.

I am writing this little note and filing it for future reference in the event the problem reappears. I will also post it on the Answers.Microsoft forum where there is another notice about this problem but a solution is not provided. Here is the error that I got on my Sony Vaio 32 bit machine. Agreed that Adobe 7 Pro has had problems in the past but if you own the program and are happy with the features, why pay big bucks to get a new version. I have had good luck with this program since I upgraded from Adobe 5 back in 2006. I have more problems with Adobe Reader than I do with the real program - perhaps compatibility issues?

Acrobat.exe - Application Error The Application was unable to start correctly. (0xc00000fd)

The topic where this is posted and discussed is here:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8\_1-windows\_install/adobe-acrobat-on-windows-81/ca855b9d-36c7-4869-9e1c-7741642880a2?rtAction=1392642652831

In the first few months of 2014 I had installed two other Adobe Upgrades and perhaps they were the problem. I uninstalled each of them and then ran Adobe repair (from the Control Panel) without any luck. The programs removed were:

    • Adobe Flash Player
    • Adobe Reader XI (11.0.06)
    • Adobe AIR

If you are going to reload Adobe Pro 7 you have to remove these anyway, so it makes sense to remove them one at a time and see if that solves the problem. In my case it did not. I completed the reinstall and everything is working fine once again.

When you remove the Adobe 7 make sure you leave the activation files on the computer, as you can no longer activate the program on-line or by phone. If you do not have those files don't panic, as you can download a version that has a new activation code that you insert during the install. You can only do this if you have your original disk and information to prove that you did own the program. You can read all the details (in particular see page 2) for the activation and deactivation help here: (glad I printed out that page with the URL!)

    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-deactivation-products.html

    Page 2 has this section:

    CS2, Acrobat 7, Audition 3 error:

Are you receiving the following error when trying to run one of the CS2 applications listed below?

"Activation was unsuccessful because the activation server is unavailable at this time"

click on the link in blue there, which is also here:

    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/creative-suite-2-activation-end-life.html

which will take you to a page that has this title:

Error: Activation Server Unavailable | CS2, Acrobat 7, Audition 3

Read through the information and follow the instructions and you will be back in business in not time.
