Russian mnemonic keyboard three letters missing: щ ч э

It is nice that windows 8 added a mnemonic Russian keyboard.

Unfortunately there are three letters which I can not find: щ, ч and э.

These three letters exist in the standard Russian keyboard. They are at the following location (in the US  keyboard): o,x and '.

Without these three letters the mnemonic keyboard is useless

You just need to type multiple keys to get to those letters: For example some (not all) of them:

sh -> ш

ch -> ч

jo -> ё

je -> э

And this is just awesome. This means you just type the way it sounds and Russian letters just magically produced.

Chego eschjo xhelat'? -> Чего ещё желать?

Note that the left hand side is quite readable as is.

One not very obvious aspect is the way the combination "ые" is typed, by the way. You actually need to hit the spacebar after typing [English] 'y', so that the keyboard knows you are in fact typing 'ы' and not the first element of ’э', which is entered using the English key sequence 'ye'. By contrast, if you want to type 'ые’ (as in 'красивые') you need to type '[krasiv]y[spacebar]e.'

Was frustrating for me before I figured that one out...

    As people already tried: same Russian layout (phonetic, when A-A,O-O,...) that you used under Windows 7, can be installed under Windows 10.

    Here is what such user wrote (note. I am not sure that step 3 is necessary - it was not needed under Windows 7):

    "1) Download .zip of the Russian phonetic layout I used under Windows 7:

    http://phonetic.WinRus.com (or same in Russian - http://files.WinRus.com)

    1. Extracted all the files from that .zip. One of the files is setup.exe
    2. I  deleted Microsoft Russian mnemonic keyboard layout

    4), Started the setup. The only slowdown was the Firewall, I had to

    allow the exception to run the program.

    Everything works as it should now."

    Not necessarily - it depends on how often you need to input Russian. If you need to do it only occasionally, then you may want to choose this method (it is used by people who are at work where IT does not allow the installation of additional keyboard layouts):

    • use good old phonetic layout which you used in previous years
    • it will cost you 2 additional seconds

    That is, you can input with that phonetic layout on Internet page (Virtual Russian Keyboard) - regular input, from keyboard (if your device have one) - though touch-based input also works (by mouse on PC or Mac) - and then just spend 2 seconds to copy your text from there to the needed place.

    You go there and choose _your_ variant of Phonetic layout and this Virtual Russian Keyboard would remember your choice, so 2nd time there will be no need to go to the menu and select your variant:

    May be... Or this could be the reason (I've posted this question to MSKLC developer, Michael Kaplan, hope he'll reply):

    I've just found on the Web the following:

    "Windows RT works only on ARM-powered devices such as the new Surface tablet."

    So it is a different hardware.

    MSKLC makes 4 hardware-specific files (4 folders for them) - for i386, wow64, amd64 and ia64, but it looks like ARM device is yet another hardware variant and it's why MSKLC customer keyboard layouts do not work under Surface...

    :-(
