Why does dllhost.exe Com surrogate consumes memory untill crash

Try these if you have not done so far:

 Important: Always create backup of your files.

2. Use windows memory diagnostic tool to check for memory problems.

3. Check your hard drive see if it is not failing? You should normally have hardware diagnostic tools in your pc provided by your PC manufacturer.

Done good to go. I am the builder, but my SSD came with diagnostic tools and is SMART capable.

4. Disable thumbnails in windows from folder options, see if it still crashes without them?

When I disable thumbnails the problem does not appear.

5. Make sure that your battery or power supply is working properly.

Done good to go. I checked with a power supply checker and multimeter.

6. Use http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/bb896653

To determine and identify the program that is causing the problem. Normally dllhost.exe runs under it.

dllhost.exe runs thumbcache.dll.

Well, I would suggest the followings :

1. Try clearing/resetting the thumbnail cache. This can be done using the Disk Clean up tool if you have not done.
2. Uninstall any media player or codec files (Divx, VLC , Roxio anything you can) installed on pc see if that solves the problem? (including Windows Media Player, Turn it off temporarily through turn on or turn off windows features in control panel > Uninstall programs then it is on the left hand menu. ) after that you might just consider to use VLC media player only as it plays any types of files.
3. Alternatively you will require windows installation disc to repair the file if it is damaged. (Not sure as SFC results were OK)

At the moment that is all I can think of.

Last thing, you might consider to check:

Also check device manager hidden drivers .... You can view them using view menu then select show hidden devices then check for any danger signs on any driver ... If there were any then try fixing them by updating or uninstalling them then restart your PC.

NOTE: I only recommend ccleaner for cleaning junk files NOT registry. If you read where I recommend it, I said for cleaning junk files.

However be careful if you are going to use it. Create backups and system restore point before use.

If all above failed to solve your problem then I would ask following questions:

 

• Before this problem, were you able to create thumbnails for 3D videos?
• When did this happen ? The problem might have caused by a third party program that has damaged your system or it could be something do with your graphic driver ... Just to be clear, when it crashes, do you get any blue screen message? or any errors that can help?

I haven't installed any new software since late 2012 except Video driver and Sound driver in which I kept backups of the drivers and have reverted back as far as 2010 with no change. Unless you count MS updates for the OS and MS Security in which I cannot go back that far.

System restore only allows Me to go back about 8 Days. But drivers I can uninstall and install older Versions.

Last time I had a look in my 3D Video folder was about 3 months ago some of the files failed to generate thumbnails but no problem with dllhost.exe com surrogate saturating all of my memory.

Yes if I let dllhost.exe to continue consuming the memory it will eventually will Blue Screen and restart.

I have the same problem which surfaced recently last week. As someone said, the most likely reason is the last Windows update. Of course, MS will ignore this if it's not hitting the majority of the machines; so we may be doomed.

dllhost.exe uses about 12-13% CPU and its memory usage constantly increases until it consumes ALL of the available memory and crashes the whole system. If I killt it using End Process, it restarts immediately and starts consuming the memory. MS clearly caused a memory leak, which MUST BE FIXED ASAP!!!

COM Surrogate 6.1.7600.16385, it is a 10 KB file under Windows\System32

Unfortunately, "Date Modified" is empty, so I cannot determine when was the last time it was altered.

Yes, I scanned it with MS Security Essentials, and it says it is clean.

If anyone finds a solution, please post here.

I miss the good old days if You had the video codec installed it made a thumbnail if you did not have the codec it made an icon simple as that. No mess no fuss, the hardest thing was finding all the codec's for all the different types and some being not free like Quick Time, Ligos, Real, Divx, Now most of these are free or have alternate versions under the GNU.
