I have identified the problem with defrag and other such programs that should work with the NTFS file system.  The problem occurs when the total free clusters listed by the MFT is a negative number such as when the cluster size is larger than the MFT file record size.  It would seem that the programmers did not account for this and include the 2^(negative cluster size) rule.  Instead, it errors and fails the defrag.

This will need to be tested by your programmers as it is included in the NTFS specification and is most likely the cause of the errors.

cant optimize one of my storage drives. its starts of analyzing drive then just never actually does a defrag.

in event viewer im getting this error for the drive in question: "was not optimised because an error was encountered: The parameter is incorrect. (0x80070057)".

the drive passes error checking with no problems.

any help would be greatly appreciated

HELLO THIS IS THE FIX BELOW

Go to This PC (Windows 8.1) right click your drive select properties then select the Tools Tab then select optimize, only drives that have drive letters need to be optimized, turn off optimize on partitions(s) that don't have drive letters assigned to them

Your hidden partitions (which can be viewed in Disk manager) are being defragged which should not happen, just right click your drive(s) (SSD or HDD)

Your are hilarious man.  The fix is not that easy my friend. As others have posted this is my c: drive. My partitions are good, HDD is not failing (SMART) bla bla bla. It's a bug. I've also reinstalled the os and same problem. Thanks for your time but I too know how to us google.  None of those fixes work. I'd love to hear any other ideas but please do not regurgitate common knowledge that anyone can find using google. I suspect we've all already done that.  Also the issue started after I upgraded to 8.1

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

1. • Open the Windows Update troubleshooter by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Səarch (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Səarch), entering Troubleshooting in the səarch box, tapping or clicking Settings, and then tapping or clicking Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, tap or click Fix problems with Windows Update.
2. • Run the troubleshooter, then open Windows Update and try to install the update again.

Run the DISM tool

1. • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Səarch.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Səarch.)

2. • Enter command prompt in the səarch box.
3. • In the list of results, swipe down on or right-click Command Prompt, and then tap or click Run as administrator.
4. • In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press the Enter key after əach command:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

5. • To close the Administrator: Command prompt window, type Exit, and then press Enter.
6. • Run Windows Update again
