This works for me in Windows 8.1 to fix this:
type "services" in the Windows search box
From the list of services, choose Windows Audio
Stop the service, then
Start the service
Sound now plays in Movie Maker.

Hi!
I am running windows 10, and I experienced at lot of different problems with Movie Maker.
No sound
sound file imported only lasted seconds -
I closed the program, but the process WMM ran in background, and wouldn't stop -
WMM process consumed a lot of CPU.... Frustrating.
I clicked on start, typed "movie", got icon in the list - rightclicked the icon - Choose "Run as Administrator".
I'm holding my breath - it's still working... :)
It just does not work!!
THANK YOU!! This worked:)
I was having trouble with audio for movie maker. read the answers but couldn't cope with that so shut down computer and restarted it and now it's fine. maybe try that first?
