This works for me in Windows 8.1 to fix this:

type "services" in the Windows search box

From the list of services, choose Windows Audio

Stop the service, then

Start the service

Sound now plays in Movie Maker.

Freemake Video Converter is one of the most recommended video converters for assisting users converting their SOURCE videos to WMV. Freemake Video Converter is extremely easy to use, but there's some 'opt-out' software bundled with the installer that makes user nervous. I've created a post to illustrate the process of the download of the application, the installation step-by-step, explaining which options are optional. I have also provided some screenshots on just how easy it is to convert your video(s) to WMV.

    I hope this helps...

same problem too, ...my solution is convert  the video in wmv format using video converter, it works to me

but where do you get the converter?  i haven't found a free converter that will convert a whole clip.  there is one free converter, but it only converts half of your video clip.  i do not want to pay $ for a converter.
