I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 - bit and my weather gadget is not working, it is displaying a message "Cannot connect to service .

I have also tried by turning off firewall and antivirus but it still don't works for me .

Update:

Microsoft has DISABLED the weather and currency gadgets via a recent Security Update, due to concerns over the vulnerability associated with these gadgets running on your computer. You can read more about it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2719662 . Adjusting your computer's settings and all these other "suggestions" people are making, will NOT work. The function has been REMOVED from the operating system. It has also been removed from the Windows 8 operating system. There are "theorists" that either agree that there is a security issue within the gadgets or Microsoft just does not want to support gadgets (usually third party software) and thus, has disabled them in Windows 7 and eliminated them in Windows 8.

Thanks to DaveNYC for the Info. Spread the word because many people are facing this problem just like you.

To all having this problem, the following worked for me:

After eading all kind of solutions, I changed the config.xml file according instructions and then I got connected but only to my own location (in my case Amsterdam). Tried everything else, no results, till I only give the exact zip code for the place I like to see the weather in the search menu and guess it worked, then I did the same on my computer in Greece (via teamviewer) and there it worked as well.

I hope it will help you as good as it did for me.

    People this is a forum not a debate column. The fix worked for me because I didn't understand the line I found (RMB -> Edit) and save it (File -> Save) without doing any changes. No changes, no option to save so did what I posted and it worked. I will post back later to let you know if it stayed or not. There could be other fixes that work but non programmer types like me try simpler solutions than what was written because they are confusing  so it doesn't break something else...simple! BTW I deleted the > in the first line and placed it back to get the save option. I will try the date thing next if it wont stay connected.

    The honor of coming up with the date fix clearly goes to Anders. Another recommendation of a time modification tool would be "NewFileTime".

    The sound of you polishing your ego is getting very tiresome!

    Your "brilliant" fix is merely a special case of a solution posted earlier by several other people.

    The root cause is that the gadget software insists on refreshing the config.xml file at least every 72 hours. The filename is hard-coded into the program and the file is no longer available, so the problem is intractable.

    Fiddling your clock can also have unexpected (and unwelcome) consequences. If you have logging that depends on the entries being in strict time order, or run one of several programs that watch the clock and disable themselves if time is running backwards (presumably to extend the license or trial period).

    Making the file read-only is completely superfluous!

    So why don't you stop insulting anyone who doesn't see the world through your ego?

    My fix works, no discussion about that!

    Set the Year to eg 2017 on the config.xml, and make the config.xml Read-Only, and that's it!

    Strange if it wouldn't work, can't you read what i wrote above?  I haven't touch the file since March 1, and it's still working!

    READ BACK in this Thread, and you'll also find plenty of other people that agrees with my fix, and says it helped them!

    The WAY of setting the date can be different - I just told people the easy way to do it, but there are plenty of programs that also can change the date of files, so just find a such if you can't deal with changing the time in Windows.

    Eg there's one prg called FileMenu Tools that can change date, and also do tons of other stuff.

    So the fix with changing the year to eg 2017 ain't at all "superfluous", and even YOU Will Be Wiser when you once again have a non-working Weather Gadget ...!

    I like you to know that I'm the one that came up with the date-fix, so prove me wrong!

    NO ONE ELSE has posted the Date-Fix before I did!
