I had this problem and think I have found the cure. Open up the Nvidia Control Panel (probably bottom right tasks bar) left hand side of control panel click on Phys configurations, click on automatic and change to GForce (if this is what your computer runs) click apply - hopefully this may cure your problems. TDR is the Timeout, Detection, and Recoverycomponent in Windows. **** What happens is the Graphics Display driver for the installed graphics card stops responding. When this happens, windows will stop and restart the driver to fix the problem.
The most common reason for this issue is that the graphics device is being overloaded or used beyond its capabilities.
This happens most often when playing graphic intensive games, but can happen with any process that uses a large amount of graphic resources, such as when editing or creating videos.
Some things you can do to avoid these problems:
a. Make sure you are using the latest graphics device driver.
b. Manage your time working with programs that are graphic intensive, exit any other programs that might also use a large amount of resources.
I would suggest you to download and Install the latest graphic card drivers from the manufacturer’s website and check.
You can install Windows 7 drivers in compatibility mode if there are no Windows 8 compatible drivers.
Follow these steps:
a) Press the ‘Windows + W’ key on the keyboard.
b) Type compatibility in the search box and then press enter.
c) Click “Run programs made for previous versions of Windows” option from the list appeared in the left side.
d) Select the drivers and install.

thanks for taking time to reply but there is nothing labeled driver installer in the list. not sure which driver is causing the problem. i don't run any games or any video intensive programs. this windows 10 free upgrade is costing too much time. search on "stop code video TDR failure atikmpag sys" (which is what the screen says when problem occurs) results in a myriad of different solutions and directions, most in techie talk. microsoft should provide a solution readily usable by the average computer user. my computer worked just fine with windows 7 -- glad i did not upgrade my other computer!

It's a good bet that there are files from multiple versions of the drivers as a result of upgrades that did not remove all the old files. Uninstall the driver completely and allow your computer to redownload and reinstall the drivers. If you want to remove all files of the drivers use Device manager and be sure to check the option to remove them from the hard drive. Restart after that.
pressing "Windows+ W' key on computer brings up Windows Ink Workspace but no search box. I typed compatibility in the task bar search box and did not find an option for “Run programs made for previous versions of Windows” Ran the compatibility trouble shooter anyway and it just gave me a long list of programs to select from that are causing problem. BUT I do not know what is causing the video tdr failure!
You need to find your driver installer in that list so you can install it using compatibility settings. But you might have better luck completely removing the driver and allowing Windows to reinstall it. I did that months ago and have not seen the error since then.
