As per the query description, the computer is performing at a slow rate as it takes more time to load certain programs.

I would like to gather few information on this issue to help you better:

  1. Did you make any changes to the computer prior to this issue?
  2. Is this issue specific to any particular program?

If the issue is not specific to any particular program, then, it could some other application or programs, which run at the background, resulting to the slow performance on the computer.

I would suggest you to perform System Maintenance troubleshooter on the computer and check if it fixes the issue.

You can follow the methods:

Method 1:

Please follow the steps to perform System maintenance check to improve performance of the computer:

a) Press Windows and x key together and select Control Panel.

b) Click on **Troubleshooting.**c) Click on View all on the left side panel.

d) Click on System Maintenance and follow the onscreen instructions.

Method 2:

I would suggest you to refer to the link to improve PC performance:

Important: Data available on bad sectors might be lost when chkdsk tries to repair your hard disc.

Method 3:

I would suggest you to boot the computer into Safe Mode and check if you experience slow performance.

    Hi All, 

    I bought a HP laptop that came with Windows 8.1 Its specs were 

    core i7

    16gb Ram

    4gb Nvidia Graphics Card 850m 

    1tb HDD

    When I started laptop I noticed 1 dead Pixel ( totally Unrelated to the problem, but part of the story ). I thought Oh Well, Will get it replaced in warranty. I started using it and found windows 8.1 to be amazingly fast. I used it for a day since it was Saturday and I had to get it replaced on monday. 

    after 12 Hours of usage I Updated everything as I heard that Windows 8.1 Needs latest WLan drivers and so On .. 

    After Installing Steam Games ( Dota 2 ) .. I started playing it in High Graphics .. No problems. 

    Next Day ( sunday ) I started my laptop and felt it was Slower, Lagging .. My Dota 2 Game was Stuttering ... I didn't know what to do. 

    Being a IT Guy myself, I tried every thing from de-fragmentation to disabling everything on start up, Yet my Windows was acting like a snail. Opened my task manager and noticed that My DISK was being used 100% ( When Computer Started ) and Relaxed to 10% after 1-2 Minutes. Each time I opened any program it would reach 100% and stick there for a while .. I couldn't Multi-task .. I couldn't believe it was hardware failure as Laptop was brand new albeit the Dead Pixel. I search through Forums and Did all the maintenance and optimization tricks I could find to no use. 

    I got the laptop replaced and thought that It was a faulty piece .. Got another one same specs .. Now It was all fine. After 1 week, It started to do the same problem .. I was horrified that it was again some Hardware failure such has HDD failing But I was not willing to send it to Warranty company as I had Work and warranty would take 15 days. 

    I again did all the stuff that was recommended and It didn't work. 

    Then I noticed that in my Task manager, My processor was using 0.75 Ghz speed ( FIXED ) whatever I did, It didn't bulge. ( I was using High Performance ) .. I noticed previously that Whenever I changed power plan processor speed Increases or decreases depending on the power plan. But it wasn't bulging from that fixed speed. 

    Than I thought That's the PROBLEM .. somehow my processor isn't doing what it supposed to do ... 

    What I did was Remove the Laptop Charger and restarted my PC .. checked my power cord if it's fit in tight with the adapter .. and Voila .. Everything got back to normal. 

    I couldn't find any info on this problem online and thought to share it incase anyone faces similar problem. I haven't faced it again to check whether Shutdown helped or Unplugging Charger and connecting it again did. Because I did Both. 

    I know this for a fact that Restarting didn't help

    I am extremely disappointed with my experience of this new version of windows. However I want my old windows back. this is a joke and a not user friendly version of OS. This is so slow I am about to look for XP which seems to be faster and more intuitive

    Sadly, Microsoft has just recently discontinued support for Windows XP. There is a reason why so many users were still on XP - it was the last, decent, stable implementation of an OS that they've had their brand on. Windows 7, although typical MS bloatware, is bearable (at work) but Microsoft has forced my hand (at home) on two of our three systems, a notebook with XP and a desktop with XP. Since neither can be upgraded to a newer version of Windows without making them yet even slower, if I must buy new computers, then they will be replaced with Macs.

    You could also try Task Manager. Open Task Manager and then the Start-up Tab. This will show you all the programs you have running at Start-up. Some things are required to run at start up but many are not, for example programs like Messenger/Skype/Office and the camera software just love to hog your PC. Just disable one at a time which allows you to revert if things don't go right. Your A/virus needs to run at Start up for example - the nature of the program should suggest if it is essential to run at Start-up. Other than the obvious essentials You should control when a program opens.

    If you right click at the extreme left hand bottom of your screen it will open a menu which, amongst other things will give you easy access to the Task Manager.

    I repeat - alter only one item at a time so that you may revert if required.

    And Also:

    What is your CPU idling at? This may cause it to run slow, to fix this make sure all your drivers are updated, and install any updates.

    A registry cleaner will always help though, may i recommend

    I have personally used both and find them both outstanding in results, win optimizer has slightly nicer GUI making it easier to clean up, it also includes features such as autoclean, CachCLeaner and more this is great if you dont want to be bothered with all those horrible registry files !

    It may also may be worth investing in a SSD of some sort, this wil defo speed it up,

    using the default defrag tool will help however i believe CCleaner and WINoptimizer have one featured,

    anyway i hope the problem is fixed, and enjoy windows 8 !

    Yes very slow, and typically MS will ask if it is your fault.  My win8 is running painfully slow, the only changes are MS updates.  I wish MS would invest more in testing.
