How to disable split screen in windows 8/8.1

OK, I found this suggestion in another thread. So far it has worked for my needs. Maybe some of you having this problem can use it too.

my current work-around for this annoying issue

go to control panel

go to internet options

go to programs tab

under opening internet explorer choose 'always in ie on the desktop'

keep ie full screen on the desktop but minimized to the task bar when not in use

then clicking a link in metro windows mail will open that link full screen in ie on the desktop. 

That was the trick.  Perfect.  I hated that everytime I clicked a link in an Oultook messager that the screen split and opened Explorer in half.  Got even worse last night when I clicked another link and now my screen was in thirds.  Thanks for sending out the fix.

I think this feature is cool, but I cant read it either. I think if when you rest the pointer on the side your trying to read it should fade to full screen. ESC to undo. This should make it better.

Shawn, what he is talking about is the "split screen" function of Window 8.  It lets you actually split the screen into two views at once.  You can toggle back and forth, but view simultaneously.  He is asking how to stop or deactivate the function when you do not need it.

I too agree with your observations.  The split screen is necessary only because we are pulled away from the desktop.

The Metro UI is cute, and that's it.  I prefer not to use it much unless I have to (i.e., if I'm forced to, because Windows opens programs that takes me there).  Then comes the situation where for some inexplicable reason, my computer awakens from sleep with a split screen.  It's an annoyance I don't much care for, so disabling this feature would be nice.

I do 95% of my work on the Desktop, and with all the buttons (not to mention the MOST used previous-Start button) that take me to the Metro screen, there should be multiple buttons that keep me on the desktop where I do not need a split screen.

Similar to all the other users here, I would like to disable split screen in Metro UI (though I'm not sure you're quite understanding peoples issues with it, judging by your responses so far...). 

For example, I like using the tiles in Metro UI to open my internet shortcuts, using Tile Genie (since MSFT still hasn't created a way to customise tiles to launch custom actions).

While in Windows 8 the internet shortcut would open full screen in Metro UI, now in Windows 8.1 it opens with Tile Genie still in the left hand side of the screen.  I would like the option to turn OFF this NEW automatic functionality in Windows 8.1. 

I'm pretty sure you'll say it's not possible, as I've looked for a solution already, so please just ask the developers to consider these options for future updates.  As much as split screen is useful for some user activities, it is unnecessary and obstructive for some others, as I've just explained above.

If you're still not clear what the issue is, or why, please say and I'll send some screenshots and pictures to illustrate further.
