Network printer shows offline on Windows 8

Original Title: I have hp laserjet 1020 plus printer installed on win 7 it was a share printer when i was giving any print from win8 pc printer is going to offline & when i remove & add printer its working

i was installed win8 latest drivers on all pc

I would like you to add few information:

Did you make any hardware or software changes on the computer prior to this issue?

I would suggest you to make sure that all the cables for the printer are connected properly and the printer is turned ON. Sometimes, offline status for a printer could be due no power to the printer.You also need to make sure that network sharing might be turned off.

If all the basic settings are checked and are up to the mark, you can follow the methods to troubleshoot the issue:

Method 1:

Method 2:

I would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the driver for the printer.

You can follow the steps to do so:

Note: Please make sure that you have the setup file for the driver of the printer before uninstalling the current version.

a) Press Windows and x key together and click on Device Manager.

b) Locate the printer driver and expand the driver icon.

c) Right click on the driver icon and click on Uninstall.

d) Follow the onscreen instructions to uninstall the driver.

e) Locate the setup file of the driver for the printer.

f) Double Click on the setup file and follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall the driver.

Check if you are able to find the printer online.

From another thread answered by TZin007,

right click on (Network)Printer , choose Properties , go to Ports tab, choose Configure Port , then un-check SNMP Status Enable option,

My printer is an old HP Deskjet 6980 I bought in 2006... and in all those years I printed 426 pages. But the solution posted by TZin007 worked for me instantly.

As soon as I unchecked it and hit apply, all those failed print jobs started printing.

It was crazy because I could ping the printer in a CMD window, but Windows 8 kept saying the printer was Offline.

So people... don't uninstall your printer drivers... because some printer setting Microsoft determined should be enabled, ahead of it's time...

UPDATE:

A day after the apparently unsuccessful fumbling with the print spooler, the troublesome old Brother MFC-885CW sprang into life! Hooray!

Except, the so far working new Brother MFC-J4510DW started to exhibit the same problems as the oldie before: offline, in error, not visible on the network when trying to reinstall the driver, when reinstalled with node name still not printing.

The exact same thing is happening on another family member's PC.

It is even less of a "solution" with my Brother MFC-885CW.

Flicking the printer spooler off and on makes the printer to be reported to be online in Devices and Printers. However, sending a printer job to it puts it offline straight away without printing anything.

Meanwhile, a newer Brother printer is working just fine on the same network. Hence, it is definitely an incompatibility issue between newer Windows versions and old printers. The fix should be an updated driver, but neither the manufacturers nor Microsoft appear interested in this: enforced obsolescence, folks should just go an buy a new one.

As I noticed my reply here has been voted more helpful than the official answer, and thus placed at the top, I feel I should add how I have been getting around this issue since I first asked here.

I am still having this issue, but have been using a "workaround" to be able to print.

This is the method I use to be able to print, first posted by StanFinney in this thread.
1. Run cmd.exe as administrator (right-click and choose run as administrator)
2. Type "net stop spooler"
3. Then type "net start spooler"
This makes network printers online (provided they're actually online, installed and all that).

However, I do not concider this a "solution". It is still annoying to have to do this every time I need to print something! I'm surprised - and very disappointed - that Microsoft has not yet addressed this issue in any of their updates. This does seem to be a common problem, and have been for a very long time. I am also disappointed by the official "answer" from Microsoft, posted by Pinaki Mohanty, that they apparently still stand by, which are rather useless in connection to this issue.
