Touch screen freeze/unresponsive LUMIA 920

I have been playing around with my phone last night taking pictures (the low light pictures are amazing)

and when I tried to unlock my phone this morning,

nothing of touch input seems to react,

even the buttons under the screen don't light up and do not respond on touch.

My power, volume and camera button all work.

Already did a few hard resets,

connected my phone to a computer hoping that would spark something

but nothing seems to work.

Anyone any idea what the problem could be and how to fix it

    Bought a Lumia 950 in Sept 2016 and it has the same issue

    After the 3 button-hard reset and careful manual selection, when which network interface is on (WLAN. mobile data) or not, it seems that the freezes are almost gone.

    So could it be, that some handshake mechanics for Internet access are involved? (The mass amount of freezes seems to have started after I left both WLAN and mobile Data on.) Just as a feeling and potential troubleshooting/test direction.

    Lumia 920, 2+ years old. I also had increasing frustration from more and more frequent screen freezes. Multiple soft resets *sometimes* restored function. Hard resets worked for a short while. I was considering opening up the phone to see if there was a loose cable. I did as suggested above, downloaded the Windows Device Recovery Tool and after backing up my phone and removing the SIM card, completely reinstalled the operating system (Win 8.1).  It took several hours for the reinstallation, all the updates and the restore from the backup, but for the past 2 days I've had zero screen freezes. I thank mikbar11 for the concise and helpful post.

    I had this exact same problem. My phone worked last night and this morning the touch screen was non-responsive. I reset it several times without it helping. I tried holding power and volume down for a full 20 seconds as Jimmy recommended. It looked like it reset several times during this and once I stopped holding them down and let it start up again the touch screen works! Hopefully it will stay working, we'll see.

    Worked for me also, I have had my phone for at least 2+ years & this is the 1st. issue I have experienced.  I really don't want to go through the headache of getting a new phone.
