Updates trying to install over and over again (KB2760411, KB2760588, and KB2760583)

These three updates are trying to be reinstalled over and over again.  Replicable on both PCs

The updates are trying to be install over and over again.  Every time I click "check for updates," there it appears again.

Update 1: I have tried restarting the PC.  Nothing.  I have also tried FixIt when trying to troubleshoot Windows Update errors.  Still nothing.  The FixIt simply "runs" till the end and then says "finish."  It did not offer to fix anything.

Windows 7 X64 SP1 with Norton Internet Security 2013 (version 20).

Known issues with this security update

  • You may be repeatedly offered this update even though it is already installed. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.

Update 5: I did not have to do anything on my part (like re-install updates), so it's probably a detection issue on Microsoft's part.

    I've had this problem since yesterday too (September 11). Same three updates keep recurring. I fixed the problem by making a cup of tea and having a biscuit. Oh, and choosing to hide these updates until Microsoft fixes the problem. In fact, I haven't technically fixed the problem.

    I just noticed this issue yesterday and for the computers we have this is what fixed our issue:

     

    We have Win 7 64 machines with office 2010 installed. However, it was installed as an upgrade to office 2007 so both office versions show up in programs and features.

     

    I uninstalled both and then just reinstalled office 2010. After a reboot, the problem updates disappeared and all is well.

     

    I know this doesn't apply to everyone, but hopefully it may help some of you...

    Hmm, maybe this is a ploy to get us all to upgrade to at least Office 2010. :-)

    Because the faulty updates specifically apply to the 2007 version not the 2010.

    That or maybe Microsoft did not click "check update" after the patch installed like some of us.

    I am curious as to why folks believe this is almost certainly a detection problem. I am having the same problem on both computers I own that have Office 2007 installed. Here is what it looks like to me:

    1. The three patches have an internal coding bug.
    2. We don't know what the internal coding bug is.

    2a. The buggy patch could be installing correctly on all machines, but the detection logic is faulty on some machines, but not on the Microsoft test machine. So the detection logic is incorrectly reporting on some machines that the patch is not installed correctly.

    2b. The buggy patch could be having a problem with conditional logic, skipping over a required part of the patch on some machines but not on the Microsoft test machine. And the detection logic is correctly reporting the patch is not installed correctly on some machines.

    Who has proof (besides Microsoft, and they are not saying) what of the above two problems these buggy patches have? It seems to me that both 2a and 2b are possible, depending upon which mistakes the programmers made.

    By the way, I put in the part about Microsoft test machine, because I hope they tested these patches (after their last code change) on at least on one machine before they distributed it to the entire world.
