This:

  1. Open an administrative command prompt
  2. Type the following four commands:
  3. net stop wuauserv

cd %systemroot%

ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

net start wuauserv 4. Try to install updates again.

and this:

a)Right Click the Start screen (bottom left hand corner)

b)Click "Run"

c)Type: "WSReset.exe" and hit enter

was solving my issue.

Thanks.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your response.

This problem may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

  1. If the Windows Update database is corrupted.
  2. If the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) service does not receive a content link header.
  3. If a required system file is registered incorrectly.

Please follow the below steps and check if it helps:

I suggest you to refer to the section: manually reset windows update components from the following link:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058?wa=wsignin1.0

NOTE: Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

Please do let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to assist.

    Thank you.

The log indicates Windows Installer error 1618 which means that some other installation is currently running.

    Please try the following:

Please start PowerShell as an administrator (as mentioned in previous posts) and enter:

    Stop-Service msiserver

    Stop-Process -Name msiexec -Force

Immediately afterwards, please start the installation of the update you had downloaded. If it installs - reboot and check for updates using Windows Update.

    Thanks again, Emkay1001,

I did as you suggested in your "try first" request, and repaired OneNote through the online repair.  This seemed to go ok.  But I continue to have updates blocked because other updates get hung up, and they all seem to relate to Microsoft Office 2010.

I did copy the installation log.  I put it in dropbox and here is a link to it: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rkidz0vfrfte1v7/onenote-x-none\_MSPLOG.LOG?dl=0

Note that when I did the online repair it appended that to the previously unsuccessful update,  So the relevant error messages are where you see the 11:58:09 time stamp, before it goes to the 22:29:39 time stamp.

    Hello,

I apologize as well - I forgot that you might not have had any ill intent.

Congratulations on resolving the problem and sharing the solution! This will surely benefit other users.

There is a Surface Book firmware and drivers update pack: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49497. It is from May 25, 2016 so it's very fresh. Perhaps it will resolve the Hyper-V issue.

Either way - you had found a legitimate bug.
