Type 1 font handling messed up by December 11, 2012 update KB2753842

Programs like Quark Xpress and Coreldraw on Windows 7 and XP have their Type 1 font handling broken by this patch. Characters larger than 15 pt. become invisible. Uninstalling the patch removes the problem. We have 330 machines with this problem. Is Microsoft getting ready to release a fix for this?

Why was this bulletin rereleased on December 20, 2012? ****Microsoft rereleased this bulletin to address a known issue in the KB2753842 update related to OpenType Fonts (OTF) not properly rendering in applications after the original update was applied. Customers who have successfully installed the original KB2753842 update are protected from the vulnerability described in CVE-2012-2556. However, customers need to install the rereleased KB2753842 update to resolve the issue with improper OpenType font rendering and to keep the affected binaries up to date.

    Yeah, I call BS on that.

    MS broke a widely used API to get a glyphs's outlines for OTF types.

    This will be an update from MS, not from the software vendors using the API.

    There are no other API calls that are backwards compatible with WinXP to do the same thing, short from reverse-engineering the OTF font type, and getting the outlines yourself (sounds simple, but it's not -- and legacy software will be dead in the water.)

    So, everyone affected: Just hang loose -- Tell your customers it is out of your hands and that MS is on it.

    I chased this issue across (3) Design stations over the last (2) days...  I system restored (2) and upgraded (1) to Windows 8, before I figured out that it was the last batch of updates.

    Now, I have customers (sign shops), blowing up my phone with engravers and design programs and production all at a stand-still.

    What a total disaster.

    Hello all,

    I've also noticed that the patch of security called "KB2753842" makes all texts made by some fonts to become invisibles, I mean, you can select the text which are invisible but you can see it on the screen, and by selecting it and you change the fonts to other fonts the text appears. This problem appears in all versions of Quark 6 to Quark 9 and in Corel Draw too.

    So by unistalling this patch, there will be no problem.

    After unistalling ensure that you make this update invisible for not installing automatically

    I hope Microsoft will find a solution.

    We also have the problem with Powerpoint, all "non standard" font text goes blank when in  presentation mode..

    The solution posted above, does not help much when the update has already been installed on the computers, so if that is the case you will have to go and uninstall the single update before you can hide it.
