Hello

I got a call from a guy with a really heavy Indian accent claiming to be working with Microsoft.

He told me that my computer had multiple problems.

He then told me to hit the Window icon on my keyboard and R (Which is to activate Run)

After that, he told me to type in "www.ammyy.com" and hit enter.

Right when he said that, I got suspicious.

I checked their website and it seemed legit.

I decided to google "AMMYY" and I saw "AMMYY scam"

I checked lots of posts having the EXACT same thing

-Indian guy

-AMMYY

-Computer problems

-Work for microsoft.

I hanged up and shut down my computer just in case. (I"m paranoid)

I turned back my computer on and the guy called me again.

He asked me why did I hanged up and I told him it was an accident.

He asked if I downloaded AMMYY yet.

I told him this "I ain't getting my computer hacked today, buddy." and hanged up again.

I ran a full computer scan with Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security.

(Which I trust since it went with my computer)

So my question.

Who are these guys?

How many people work with them?

Why aren't they sued yet?

Is my computer safe?

You're fine. They cold called you and have no access to your PC since you didn't install anything or allow them to connect to your PC.

Avoid scams that use the Microsoft name fraudulently - Microsoft does not make unsolicited

    I had a similar situation yesterday. It's scary because these people are so aggressive and appear to know too much. I got so far as to let him take control (stupid me), but stopped him when he started telling me I'd be charged since he's started out saying I wouldn't be. I walked away for a second, so I don't know if he'd done anything in the command prompt. He didn't have time to download anything, and I don't think he had time to get anything off of my hard drive. (Our connection is so slow, I doubt it.) I immediately changed passwords, and I never gave him credit card info. Does anyone know if these cyberthugs are responsible for any identity theft, or is it just theft of the money they charge and the wiping out of bank accounts if you give debit card information? Has anyone been robbed who didn't give out any information? Since this has been reported many times, why hasn't the FTC stopped these scumbags? I've run malware and virus scans and have removed all issues found, but I don't if any were a result of yesterday's sabotage. Is there any way to search the registry for the ammyy file?

    Forgot to mention that when I asked them which company they represented, they said StayProtect. Don't know if that is a legit company.

    I've just had them call me now... not the first time but don't know if they are the same ones.

    All I do now is sound concerned then get them to wait a few mins whilst I "go to my pc". Then I make them wait a minimum of 5 mins whilst it "powers up slowly"... "had problems a long time". Then I make them wait for the software to load and the mouse "to be able to move".

    When they asked me to type in www.ammyy.com I queried why the search box drop down had the word SCAM at the end of their address. After a while they politely put the phone down when I said that I was worried about what was going on.

    2 mins later their "technician" rang and started shouting at me that my option was for them to fix my infected machine or to continue in which case he would shut down my internet access. He kept shouting and trying to make me answer "yes or no". When I finally was allowed to ask if I could tell him something, he put the phone down.

    I've got some time on my hands so I enjoy wasting theirs.
