Movie Maker 2012 - Black screen on playback

I recently installed Windows Essentials 2012 on my Windows 7 laptop. I went into Movie Maker and tried it out. Unfortunately when I wanted to preview something text or photos I had selected, a black screen appeared in the player. I can add text, music, photos and videos, but when I hit the play button, all I get is a black screen in the player. Is this something other people have experienced? Is there any way to fix this?

Uninstall your version 2012 and then get the 2011 version from....

Movie Maker 2011

Had the same blank screen problem and converted back to Essentials 2011. That didn't work at first either, until I realized I had recently installed a Microsoft update (KB 2670838) which updates Direct3D components among other things. Once I uninstalled that Microsoft update, the 2011 version worked fine again. More info on that update here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838?wa=wsignin1.0

To uninstall the KB 2670838 update, please follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
  2. Click View installed updates.
  3. Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB 2670838), and then click Uninstall.

    @miguelito56,

    Is that true if you save the movie in .wmv format instead?  When saving the movie, rather than taking the default of .mp4 format video, try changing the Save As file type to .wmv.  I'm curious if the results will be different.

    If not, what details do you have on your video card and the driver version (run dxdiag and go to the Display tab)?

    I created this great slideshow with music of a recent trip to the Grand Canyon in Movie Maker that I can watch in Movie Maker just fine. But when I burn it onto a DVD or save it for emailing only the music can be heard - the photos/videos cannot be seen. I mean there is obviously something burnt to the DVD and there is a file created for an email - but there is no video.  I'm not sure how much more of a step-by-step process I can provide you but this is pretty frustrating and I am by no means a computer expert.
