I would not start a new thread. A Moderator may move the thread but both Spirit X and I both understand where you are in resolving your problem.

You can download Belarc Advisor which will most likely reveal your product key:

    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

The problem is that without an operating system CD you are likely to be in some diifficulty trying to reinstall on a new hard drive. SpiritX may be able to suggest a workaround but a non-functioning CD drive makes a successful reinstallation even more remote.

The test utility is accessible through one of the links SpiritX gave you:

As things are, I cannot see the wood for the trees. Would it be better to terminate this thread and go to Answers as applicable to XP SP3. I am getting instructions from several sources and instead of attempting things serially I am being given them in parallel.

What is your computer make and model? Answer: locally built

What is the hard drive make and model?

    ST3500320AS [Hard drive] (500.11 GB) -- drive 0, s/n 9QM832MB, rev SD15, SMART Status: Healthy

Do you have a retail or OEM Window XP CD or are you reliant on a branded copy of Windows XP on the hard drive? Do have the product key for activating after reinstalling?

No my DVD drive doesn't work. It cannot read or write and the drawer  opens at all odd moments.

a branded copy of Windows XP on the hard drive? Yes

Do have the product key for activating after reinstalling? No.

Note that I have gone to the Seagate website but see nothing that refers to diagnostics.

Sounds  like the hard drive has developed an issue and it "may" be failing though that is

    not 100% at this point.
