An update to Movie Maker 2012 was just released today. It lowers the hardware requirements back to DirectX 9, so you might see if you can run it. There are more details in the pinned post. The version number is 16.4.3504.0912.  The details are also at the beginning of this (now very long) post.

So if you had DirectX 9 hardware that worked for WLMM 2011, give Movie Maker 2012 a go again.

Hello LD,

This issue affects the following versions of Movie Maker:

·         Windows Live Movie Maker 2011

·         Windows Movie Maker 2012

Here's what's happening:

1)

Movie Maker makes heavy use of video and graphics acceleration capabilities provided by a computer's video card to decode and encode video files and render effects, transitions and text. Sometimes video card drivers (the software that allows Windows and Movie Maker to interact with the video card) have issues that prevent Movie Maker from working correctly.

The following video cards and corresponding driver versions below have been identified as having issues that prevent Movie Maker 2011 and Movie Maker 2012 from working correctly. Movie Maker will not start with the following video cards and driver combinations.

To resolve the issue, install the latest video card driver version.

2)

If you are running on DirectX 9 hardware, please ensure that you have installed the Windows Update for DirectX 9 support available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2741355, and that you are running the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012.

To verify that you have the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012, please do the following:

1.     In Movie Maker, press Alt + F on your keyboard to open the File menu

2.     Select About Movie Maker

3.     Verify that the version number is 16.4.3505.0912.

The latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012 can be downloaded at http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-movie-maker-get-started

 Hope this helps,

Bobby

Hi, just to update I have tried the following to try and update the driver from the link on page 1 of this forum, but I cannot download as the box appears with, 'The driver being installed is not validated for this computer.  Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer'.  Which is DELL but please could you help and supply me with a link for the correct driver?

    • Driver Version: We look at this to see if it is in the range of drivers versions known to have issues with Movie Maker and to find a newer version that may work. (See this thread's answer on the first page of this thread for the complete list of bad driver version numbers)

Hi Alex, when I right click on my desktop I seem to also have a NIVIDA control panel, and I have GEFORCE GT540M version 267.21. Do I need to do something with this too. I am a little confused, why do I have two Graphics, the other being intel?

Could you also help me whether this NIVIDA needs updating too. As I don't know which one controls windows live messenger and when in video conversation it keeps popping up for me to update my drivers and for the sound drivers and also my image flickers sometimes.

Hopefully all these issues can be sorted once I have the 'windows essentials' sorted to work with 'movie maker'.

    Thank you
