An update to Movie Maker 2012 was just released today. It lowers the hardware requirements back to DirectX 9, so you might see if you can run it. There are more details in the pinned post. The version number is 16.4.3504.0912.  The details are also at the beginning of this (now very long) post.

So if you had DirectX 9 hardware that worked for WLMM 2011, give Movie Maker 2012 a go again.

Hello LD,

This issue affects the following versions of Movie Maker:

·         Windows Live Movie Maker 2011

·         Windows Movie Maker 2012

Here's what's happening:

1)

Movie Maker makes heavy use of video and graphics acceleration capabilities provided by a computer's video card to decode and encode video files and render effects, transitions and text. Sometimes video card drivers (the software that allows Windows and Movie Maker to interact with the video card) have issues that prevent Movie Maker from working correctly.

The following video cards and corresponding driver versions below have been identified as having issues that prevent Movie Maker 2011 and Movie Maker 2012 from working correctly. Movie Maker will not start with the following video cards and driver combinations.

To resolve the issue, install the latest video card driver version.

If you are running on DirectX 9 hardware, please ensure that you have installed the Windows Update for DirectX 9 support available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2741355, and that you are running the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012.

To verify that you have the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012, please do the following:

1.     In Movie Maker, press Alt + F on your keyboard to open the File menu

2.     Select About Movie Maker

3.     Verify that the version number is 16.4.3505.0912.

The latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012 can be downloaded at http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-movie-maker-get-started

 Hope this helps,

Bobby

Hi, I too have the same problem. Please could you help me as you have above, and how do I provide you with info you require?

    thank you

Thanks for reaching out to provide the needed info. Please follow these steps:

    1. Press the Start button to open the Windows Start menu
    2. Type "dxdiag" in the Start menu search box and then press the "Enter" key to search for and open the "DirectX Diagnostic Tool" (The "dxdiag" program icon is a blue circle with a yellow X inside)
    3. Press the "Save All Information..." button at the bottom the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window
    4. In the "Save as" window that appears, save the DxDiag.txt file to your Desktop
    5. Open the DxDiag.txt file from your desktop (it should open in Notepad or a similar text editor program)
    6. Copy the "System Information" and "Display Devices" sections from the DxDiag.txt and paste it into a reply to this thread. You may wish to delete the "Machine name" line from your reply for privacy reasons. (The second line under the "System Information" section)

If you are interested to know, here's the only important info from the DxDiag.txt file that we look at at this time:

    System Information

    • Operating System: which version of the driver you need; either Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit)
    • System Manufacturer: E.g. Acer, HP, Sony, Toshiba, etc., so we know which manufacturer's website to go to to find the driver
    • System Model: To find the computer model on the manufacturer's website

    Display Devices

    • Card name: This is the model of your display device in text format. This is also know as the "video card" or "video adapter" or "display adapter" or "graphics processig unit (GPU)". This is just a human-readable readable name of the device.
    • Device Key: This is the specific model of your display device in a number format.
    • Driver Version: We look at this to see if it is in the range of drivers versions known to have issues with Movie Maker and to find a newer version that may work. (See this thread's answer on the first page of this thread for the complete list of bad driver version numbers)

Hi, did the issue get resolved for you after they had recommend the following as I too have the same issue. thank you

Thanks for listing the details for your system and graphics adapter. According to the info you provided, your currently installed Intel HD Graphics driver version is 8.15.10.2253 which is known to have issues with Movie Maker.

I found a recommended Intel HD Graphics driver update From Dell for your Dell Inspiron N7110 notebook that should resolve the issue for Movie Maker 2011 and 2012:
