“Error code: c945000e Sorry, Movie Maker can't start …” when I start Movie Maker

This issue affects the following versions of Movie Maker:

·         Windows Live Movie Maker 2011

·         Windows Movie Maker 2012

 

Here's what's happening:

 

1)

Movie Maker makes heavy use of video and graphics acceleration capabilities provided by a computer's video card to decode and encode video files and render effects, transitions and text. Sometimes video card drivers (the software that allows Windows and Movie Maker to interact with the video card) have issues that prevent Movie Maker from working correctly.

The following video cards and corresponding driver versions below have been identified as having issues that prevent Movie Maker 2011 and Movie Maker 2012 from working correctly. Movie Maker will not start with the following video cards and driver combinations.

To resolve the issue, install the latest video card driver version.

If the generic video card drivers direct from Intel or NVIDIA listed above cannot be successfully installed on your computer, you may need to download the latest video card driver provided by the computer system manufacturer for your specific computer model. Start your search here:

If you are running on DirectX 9 hardware, please ensure that you have installed the Windows Update for DirectX 9 support available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2741355, and that you are running the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012.

To verify that you have the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012, please do the following:

 

1.     In Movie Maker, press Alt + F on your keyboard to open the File menu

2.     Select About Movie Maker. 

3.     Verify that the version number is 16.4.3505.0912.

I have an Acer Aspire 3830T and am not sure of what drivers I need. The Intel drivers say "The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer." WLMM 2011 worked just fine, but I got the 2011 version back and it's giving the same exact error message as the 2012 version gave me (the original message). I can only fix any software issues, as this is a school owned computer and I frequently use Movie Maker. I do not see why I suddenly cannot use the program, as I had a 2.1 GHz processor that worked just fine with WLMM 2011, and only used a lot of the processor's power when I saved videos. I realize that the program is going to use a lot of the processor, but when a laptop that's 18 months old with 4GB of RAM and a 2.1 GHz processor cannot run an editing program because the program suddenly requires 300 Hz more processing power, that's annoying. Even more annoying is the fact that the old version was working 100% (albeit it need a LOT more features).

I'll check out the new version, hopefully less problems.

You'll have to ask that question to MSFT support rather than replying to a response of mine (Microsoft MVP's are independent advisors and not affiliated or part of MSFT Support)

An earlier Video driver and the initial RTM version of Movie Maker 12 (part of the Windows Essentials 2012 suite of products) share fault in the issue.

 - Resolution for some has been rectified by singular or a combination of the following.

 1. Updated video card drivers

 2. Installation of KB 2741355 followed by updating Movie Maker 12 RTM to QFE1 (QFE1 is ghe subsequent version released after RTM)

 Note: Movie Maker 12 QFE1 - relaxed the Direct X requirement down from (10 to 9).

If neither of those (two) options resolve problems, the only other valid resolution may be to return to using the prior version (previously recommended by MSFT)

 For Vista, Win7, Win8 - Windows Live Essentials 2011 (which includes Movie Maker 2011)

 For XP - Windows Live Essentials 2009 (2011 and 2012 are not available for XP)

• returning to a prior version requires complete removal of a later version and reinstall of the earlier (since no mix and match of different calendar year versions)

Unless something new occurs, the above may be the end of the (and the only) recommendations going forward short of upgrading to newer hardware or Windows 8 or switching to optional free or fee based third party software (considering installation and use of any of the 'free' Live Essentials or Windows Essentials products also agrees to the Terms of Use allowing MSFT to change, modify, or discontinue the product without notice)

Windows DVD Maker is not part of the Windows Live or Windows Essentials programs. Support for it, and problems should be directed to the Windows support forum.
