In Chrome 37.x go to chrome://flags and disable DirectWrite. That's the first thing i did with this update.

I did a clean install of Windows 8 RTM when it became available.
The blurry font rendering that plagued the Preview versions has remained.
It is particularly bad in IE10 and Office 2013.
No amount of adjustment with Clear Type tuner helps much.
I have tried all the fixes recommended like ticking "use Software rendering instead of GPU rendering" in IE10 and in Options in Office 2013.
It makes absolutely no difference.
I installed Windows 8 on completely different hardware to check if it was a graphics card issue. The poor font rendering was still there.
I am currently dual booting Windows 7 and 8 on the same PC. Fonts in Windows 7 remain perfectly clear. In windows 8 they are so bad, the OS is basically unusable.
How do I get readable fonts in Windows 8?
Hardware: ASUS P8Z77-V PRO, Intel Core i7 3770K, ASUS Radeon HD7770 graphics, Samsung Syncmaster 2443BW 24 inch monitor.

2012-12-21T15:14:12+00:00 Unbelievable that Microsoft doesn't want to fix DirectWrite rendering on ordinary laptop. Can it be a issue related to screen technology? Are IPS screens looking good in Modern UI mode ? What is the quality of MS Surface's font rendering ? I have heard that it's quite good, how it can be possible ?

2012-12-20T23:19:12+00:00 Unfortunately not better even on top notebook resolutions with larger screens - on 15'' HP EliteBook 1920x1200, it's obviously blurry and much worse than non-MS apps like Firefox or Chrome, for example. I actually don't use IE10 anymore because of this and going to downgrade back to Word 2010 from 2013.

The metro app are unusable with this DirectWrite render on a laptop standard resolution 1366x768
I have seen in a local shop a Sony Vaio Duo 11' with a full HD resolution and metro app fonts are good to see. Perhaps this monochrome anti-aliasing method is good only on a top resolution device (full hd or more).

Worse still, Microsoft do not appear to be even remotely interested in providing a fix.
Simply appalling.
