Metro App for Messenger "We can't send a message right now"

I'm trying to use the Messenger Metro App for Facebook chat, and I have the accounts linked. Whenever I start it up it says "getting info" at the top, but my status down in the bottom is always "Not Connected". I am unable to switch the status to Active or Invisible because these options are greyed out. When I type a message into the text box, red text appears above it that reads "We can't send a message right now"

After I initially installed Windows 8, the Messenger app worked fine. Later on in the night after some updates it quit working and I have rebooted my system several times since then to no avail.

I had the same problem as well. I uninstalled/installed and the issue didn't return yet. I believe the issue is with Skype, just as JoakimMagnusson noted. 

Reinstalling the Messenger app fixed the problem for me , even with skype still being there I can send and receive messages.

    Hey guys, as all of you I have had this problem for an extended amount of time, I think I have found the solution:

    1. Uninstall Mail, Messenger, Calendar, People Apps
    2. Uninstall any App that asked the question "Allow this app to run in the background?" i.e. Skype
    3. Restart System
    4. Download and install Mail, Messenger, Calendar, People Apps along with any other apps that you've uninstalled previously in step 2.
    5. Start Messenger FIRST and allow the app to run in the background.
    6. IMPORTANT: Do not allow any other app to run in the background. i.e. Skype, Mail, Calendar

    Hope this works for you guys, sorry if it doesn't.

    Just want to point out that the Messaging app is not working at all today, no matter how many times I reinstall. I've also tried uninstalling Skype and reinstalling Messaging (and the rest) to see if that would have an effect. it did not.

    So today, no matter what I do or how many times I reinstall, I still get the "We can't send a message right now" message.

    My problem is definitly related to skype. As soon i uninstall skype the people messenger works again.

    When i install skype it works as well - but only till the first startup of skype app (where this question appears if you allow skype to run in background)

    As soon I allow Skype to work in background the people messenger stops working and I get the message "cant send message right now..."

    Problem is occurring with my system too. All works after the reinstall of the People app (and all the apps included Mail etc). However, so far it seems that after I have launched Skype app, the problem happens again. To fix, I then have to reinstall the People app etc.
