Metro App for Messenger "We can't send a message right now"

I'm trying to use the Messenger Metro App for Facebook chat, and I have the accounts linked. Whenever I start it up it says "getting info" at the top, but my status down in the bottom is always "Not Connected". I am unable to switch the status to Active or Invisible because these options are greyed out. When I type a message into the text box, red text appears above it that reads "We can't send a message right now"

After I initially installed Windows 8, the Messenger app worked fine. Later on in the night after some updates it quit working and I have rebooted my system several times since then to no avail.

I had the same problem as well. I uninstalled/installed and the issue didn't return yet. I believe the issue is with Skype, just as JoakimMagnusson noted. 

Reinstalling the Messenger app fixed the problem for me , even with skype still being there I can send and receive messages.

    Right click on the messaging app and select uninstall. This will uninstall the messaging, email and calender app since it's a package. Go to the store and search for the program. I believe it's called something like message, mail calender. I don't remember the exact details. After you install the app, each of those apps should appear in the original place on the metro start screen.

    I uninstalled it and now I cant find the app in the store in order to reinstall. Help!

    yup , i had this prob. in dec, last year.

    for some reasons i reinstalled win8. then it was working fine for some days.

    & this problem arises again , it is better to switch to win7 ,a more stable OS rather than reinstalling win8 every time if microsoft cant solve this problem.

    It happens for all contacts.

    neither i can be online to my friends nor my friends can be online to me via this app.

    it just shows "We cant send a message right now. "

    i have this problem since last 2-3 months.

    tried all possible solution.

    nothing happens at all.

    if microsoft cant fix this bug.

    i will switch back to windows 7 , since win8's main feature of metro app frustrates me rather than facilitating me.....

    You don't mention if this happens on all attempted messages.   For me this issue was down to a specific contact level.  Of all my contacts, only 2-3 showed this problem.  All other contacts worked with no problems.  I ended up removing specific contacts and recreating them...no problems since and no need to remove and reinstall Windows 8.
