Windows 7 Troubleshooter Error 0x8E5E0247

I am having problems with the Troubleshooter in Windows 7 64-bit .  Any time I try to use it to fix anything, I get the error message "An error occurred while troubleshooting:  A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting."   I rebooted in safe mode and the same error occurs.  It also always fails the same way trying to run  Program Compatibility.   Error message:

Package Id: PCWDiagnostic

Path:  c:\windows\diagnostics\system\PCW

Error Code:  0x8E5E0247

Any help would be appreciated.

I finally was able to solve this problem.  I found the answer on another forum and it solved the problem as well.

The error was caused by the Intel Rapid Storage Technology program that comes with my Toshiba laptop. 

I guess the old driver didn't like the new 640gb hard drive I installed.  Maybe it was only designed for up to 500gb (this is my old hard drive size that worked fine).

The Intel Rapid Storage Technology program was shown in the taskbar notifications with a yellow exclamation point.

As soon as I updated this driver to the latest from the Intel website, Windows Update and everything else worked.

Hope this helps everyone else having the same problem.

    Thank you! This fixed the same problem on my Sony Vaio. The Vaio support page says not to use the Intel Rapid Storage Technology software, but, like you, I was out of options. Your link worked perfectly.

    Hi, I was having the same problem with window update + many other updates and found this post. And I realised I just updated my hard disk to 1 TB and 8GB ram. Found the Intel folder in my C drive, though I am not sure if that is for my hard disk. Still I decided to give it a try as there was nothing else to do anyway. Wow wow wow! It works like magic!!! Everything works after the upgrade. If any of you just upgrade your hard disk and is facing the same problem with window update, you may want to conside try the link below. Hope this helps...
