What is the Jave TM Plug in SSV Helper?

Do I need it?

If I don't need it, how do I get rid of it?

I'm running Windows Vista.

Java is a programming language. You need something called the Java Runtime Environment to run programs written in Java. The Plugin is part of that. A small number of websites also use this. The Java Runtime Environment will appear in Programs and Features in the Control Panel and can be uninstalled from there. Unfortunately, there is a bug in the uninstallation that leaves the entry for the plugin in the Internet Explorer Manage Addons window after Java is uninstalled. This is harmless because the file has been deleted. To remove the entry in Manage Addons would require editing the Registry.

This bug has been known since at least 2008, but nothing seems to have been done about it.

    None taken. Sorry I'm just seeing this now. And actually I agree with you and completely understand what you mean. My issue was I thought people were jumping all over Dax for not giving a good enough answser. And mostly for asking the OP why he wanted to know in 2nd post. (I believe this was because the OP said Dax didn't answer his question but I looked at the link provided by Dax and it did answer the question.) Then Cook came in and makes a condescending remark about Dax not knowing what he's talking about. And he does answer the question in a better way but I thought he could've done it without the mean sarcasm dripping over. Then someone after Cook lays into Dax as well. From there its 2 pages of posts either profusely praising Cook or condemning Dax. I didn't think Dax deserved it. I did not take his 2nd post asking why the OP wanted to know as offensive or cocky but apparantly everyone else did. My thinking was Cook was the cocky one and here are all these people praising him  and condemning Dax.  I know both were trying to help and people have different styles in how they answer. But some of the praises went overboard and its this kind of naive worship that encourages people who condescend to....... well condescend even more. Thats what I was trying to say

    Thank you for meaningful info.  What a rariety.  I was required to install Cisco's Envelope Tools, http://applet.postx.com,  in order to recieve a secure document, not a common practice, which apparently required JAVA and asked to enable SSVHelper Java Browser Helper Object.  The document appeared before I'd enabled it, and your reply led me to disallow it.  Again, thanks.

    I agree with Steve, you should not be a community star member, if you have this attitude that "only you should know the "why""....
