MTP USB device failed to install on Windows 7

Originally, (beginning of December 2010) my Canon Powershot camera (SX110IS attached beautifully.  Now it gives the failed to install message whenever I attach it.

"Device driver software was not successfully installed"

"MTP USB Device Failed.

Please help.

Hi,

Method 1:

Disconnect all the external devices (printers, scanner, USB (Universal Serial Bus) drives, etc...)Except mouse and the keyboard and then boot up.

If this corrects the issue then add the devices back one at a time until you discover the piece of hardware causing the issue. Then get any updated drivers\software for the device.

Method 2:

If you still come across the issue, I suggest you to run Hardware Troubleshooter and then check for the issue.

a)     Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter by clicking the Start button and then clicking Control Panel.

b)     In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Hardware and Sound, click Configure a device.‌

c)       If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Method 3:

If the above step does not help us to diagnose the issue, uninstall the drivers for USB [Universal Serial bus] host controller and restart the computer. Let Windows install the generic drivers and then see if it helps you to fix the issue.

a)     Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, then Device Manager in the search box.‌

b)     If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

c)      Look for the device under USB [Universal Serial bus] host controller, right click on it and select Uninstall.

d)     Reboot the computer.

e)     On reboot, Windows 7 should re-install the drivers automatically.

Method 4:

If the above methods don’t work you can try to reinstall the drivers for your Canon Camera. To do so refer the link provided below:

    I have the same problem and have followed the same steps but the drivers still don't work. I've been trying to set up a htc and sync manager but both can't install. I don't know what to do anymore...

    win + R -> regedit

    HEKY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SYSTEM --> CurrentControlset --> Control --> Class --> {EEC5AD98-8080-425F-922A-DABF3DE3F69A}

    delete upperFilter

    Thanks very much!!!  Haven't tried the camera yet BUT this cured my inability to use Microsoft's WMDC (Windows Mobile Device Center) for remotely connecting via USB to my PDA (runs Windows Mobile 6.5)!!  

    For several months now, I have been using a Virtual Machine (installed on Windows 7)  that hosts Windows XP (with Active Sync 4.5) due to the incapacitated WMDC.  You will never know how much time and grief this will save me!!

    Ohhh yeahhh. Is very problematic, with my cell Sony Xperia S (LT26i) negative connection with my PC. Is not easy nothing!

    The only subkey is "Properties" that cannot be opened.

    On my laptop the main entry is the same, but there are several subkeys, which are related to the two devices that I have. There's one subkey referencing to Canon, one to Samsung and four identical ones for WPD FileSystem Volume Driver. All these are missing from my desktop.

    Other people have said that they get the installation working in safe mode, but in my case there's no difference between normal mode and safe mode.

    My version of Windows 7 is Ultimate N. I had originally some problem in installing the Media Feature Pack that has to be installed separately for the N version. I can't remember, what it was, but everything I need seemed to work. I have reinstalled the Feature Pack without getting messages about errors, but that didn't help. I have also uninstalled Nokia phone support, again with no effect.
