Windows Start button not working

The Windows start button is not working. When I press it nothing happens. SO I cannot shut down the computer in the normal manner or access any programs other than ones with desktop icons.

Hi,

I faced a similar issue! The following worked for me

  1. Right click on the Start Button and select "Run"
  2. Type "regedit"
  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Explorer>Advance
  4. Create a new DWORD (32-bit) value, call it "EnableXamlStartMenu"
  5. Restart Explorer​ from task manager.

Hi nickthomp.

Does start menu open if you press the windows key on the keyboard?.

Can you right click the start menu orb and choose properties, if so

In the Customize Start Menu dialog box, click Use Default Settings, clickOK, and then clickOK again.

Also try.

1 .   Press Ctrl + Alt+ delete on the keyboard and click on task manager.

2 .   Click on the Process tab and locate explorer.exe in the windows and click on end task.

3 .   Click on File and then click on New.

4.   Type explorer.exe and press enter.

    To Mdfritz;

    My issue was with a corrupted Windows 10 USER account only, and the loss of functionally. (Where the problem was fixed by creating a new used account)

    I have ZERO experience with OneDrive, and so I have no information if a corrupted Windows 10, USER account has any relationship to a Microsoft account for OneDrive.

    As for cloud storage, I clearly can state that even if I lived another 65 years, I would never place any of my files on the cloud. The following is some text (modified) that I had written back in 2015-09 on the subject.

    It is not logical to store data in the cloud, where any number of hackers, or agencies and can access it without a warrant.

    Backup your data:  As a backup, I also store my data on another drive, but it’s NOT powered up unless needed to access the bulk of my files.

    Copies of my data are also stored on some USB drives, and several standard hard drives outside the computer. One full-up copy (on hard disk) is also stored off-site in the case of fire.

    Be sure to backup you BOOKMARKS, as many folks would just cry if they were ever lost.

    In Mozilla Foxfire, and Tor, these are the *.json files that are located on your desktop.

    Just copy them all to you backup drives.

    ***If anyone still thinks their hard drive will not fail is a fool.***There is nothing wrong with four or five backup devices.

    So if you want to add your microsoft account back after creating the new local account, can you do that without an issue?

    I rely on my OneDrive files and OneNote notes on my microsoft account quite a bit, but I have a hunch that the corruption lies therein (from reading other posts). I was thinking about deleting all my OneDrive files from online storage and re-uploading them once I'm in the clear. Any thoughts?
