The Windows start button is not working. When I press it nothing happens. SO I cannot shut down the computer in the normal manner or access any programs other than ones with desktop icons.

Hi,

I faced a similar issue! The following worked for me

  1. Right click on the Start Button and select "Run"
  2. Type "regedit"
  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Explorer>Advance
  4. Create a new DWORD (32-bit) value, call it "EnableXamlStartMenu"
  5. Restart Explorer from task manager.

Hope this helps!

Hi nickthomp.

Does start menu open if you press the windows key on the keyboard?.

Can you right click the start menu orb and choose properties, if so

In the Customize Start Menu dialog box, click Use Default Settings, clickOK, and then clickOK again.

Also try.

1 .   Press Ctrl + Alt+ delete on the keyboard and click on task manager.

2 .   Click on the Process tab and locate explorer.exe in the windows and click on end task.

3 .   Click on File and then click on New.

4.   Type explorer.exe and press enter.

Hope his helps.

    PROBLEM SOLVED 2016-01-04

If you are using Windows 10, and you have any of the problems LISTED BELOW, then your user account had a corrupted file, and it can be fixed by creating a new "local user account". Give the new USER full administrator control.

After creating a new user, you will then have to personize your settings, such as turning off a myriad of reporting functions that automatically report back to the mothership. As a new user, you most likely will also reset some of your sounds and program attributes, so that your application open with the correct applications.

Note One: As always, before making any changes, it is highly recommended to backup all of your current files to another drive. This includes coping your user files, if you want to save your e-mails. If using Microsoft Live Mail, these are all of your EML files in your INBOX, and OUTBOX.

Note Two: DO NOT delete the original USER right away, as this action may delete some files you may still need, such as E-Mails.

Note Three: Downloading a new copy of Windows 10 will not fix you corrupted files of the original user.

    List of problems

Originally posted on 2015-12-01 as Windows Start button not working, and now has been revised and expanded on 2015-12-21: Microsoft had done something clever again (with Windows 10). This is long, but all the issues are related, and all appeared to start after an overnight startup.

(ONE) The Windows keyboard button no longer works, and LEFT click on the Windows icon no longer works.

(TWO) The Search Windows box at the lower left (task bar) no longer works.

(THREE) In general, the PC is slow to respond, or to open programs.

(FOUR) Right click is now very slow to work anywhere, if it works at all.

(FOUR-b) Right click on the task bar items, such as opening WORD, Excel or the sound icon no longer works.

(FIVE) Sometimes Task Manager may fail to open, or opens, but may fail to run.

(SIX) Reloaded Windows 10, and it DID NOT help at all. The longer you use Win 10, the more features that you find have quit working.

(SIX –b) After loading Win 10, the very first thing you’ll all want to do is to open Settings and click on Privacy to disable all that Microsoft tracking ****, that can be normally found on the General tab, though other tabs are important as well.

(SIX –c) No access to turn off all the tracking and reporting **** of the Windows 10 defaults (Cannot find or open Settings to click on Privacy). There is no ability to modify any of that now.

(SIX –d) ShellExperienceHost.exe ~~~ ShellExperienceHost.exe shows to be running on a (normal) duplicate computer, but not on this compromised computer, and cannot be run on this computer.

(SIX –e) SearchUI.exe is the Windows Shell Experience Host ~~~ SearchUI.exe (To be clear, spelled as U as in Union, and I, as in Ida at the end) is the Search and Cortana application and shows to be running on a (normal) duplicate computer, but not on this compromised computer, and cannot be run on this computer.

(SIX –f) ApplicationFrameHost.exe ~~~ ApplicationFrameHost.exe shows to be running on a (normal) duplicate computer, but not on this compromised computer, and cannot be run on this computer.

(SIX –g) SystemSettings.exe  ~~~ SystemSettings.exe does not run, or appear to do anything.

(SEVEN) After reloading Windows 10, the computer boot time is now 187 seconds just to show my screen background picture. It takes a total of 221 seconds for the boot to stop fooling around, so you regain the ability to start working.

(EIGHT) Downloaded Microsoft Safety Scanner (again) from   http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx   The Safety Scanner has now been run using two different downloads, weeks apart, and does not solve any of the issues.

(NINE) Windows 10 is not ready for prime time.

    To x1mc:

Then you need to contact tech support chat at Microsoft.com.

    Go To:

    http://suppert.microsoft/en-us

You will see a line that says "Contact Answer Desk"

    click on it.

When the Answer Desk window opens select "Device, Phone or Xbox.

When that window opens select Windows Desktop.

    Then Technical Support.

Then Chat Online with MS Tech and follow any instructions and you can talk to an Answers Tech.

The chat window will tell you where you are in line to talk to the tech.

They will help you by setting up a remote control of your computer to hopefully fix it.

During the remote control they can set up a new user account on your computer to hopefully clear your problem.

    They did mine!
