Adding MKV files to the Windows Media Player library

How do I add MKV files to the "Video" section rather than the "Other" section of the library?

Copy/paste the following into Notepad, save it as  WMP_MKV.reg , double click this file to add it to the registry, and restart WMP:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

 

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.mkv]

"PerceivedType"="video"

 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions.mkv]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\MLS\Extensions]

After that, MKV files will be added to  Video instead of to Other media (it might be necessary to re-add the files).

    I suggest that you try resetting the media library. First note that resetting the library will make you lose all current play counts, and possibly ratings too. Then, follow these steps:

    • Reboot the PC.
    • Go to Start, type services.msc in the Search field, and press Enter. In Services, find the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. If its status is Started, double-click the service and click Stop.
    • Go to Start, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft in the Search field, and press Enter. This folder will open up in Windows Explorer.
    • In this folder, delete the Media Player folder. If you can't see the folder, then it's probably hidden. Set Explorer to show hidden files and folders, and to show protected system files.
    • Start WMP, your library will have been reset and will be rebuilt. Check if the issue still occurs.

    Hi Tim

    Thanks for the info.

    I am encountering a problem that other people seem to have experienced.

    When I add files to my library there seems to be a random delay somewhere between 5 minutes and several days until the files (of any video type) appear in the WMP library hence can then be streamed to my DVD player

    Is there any way to force an update of the WMP library? Opening and closer it and rebooting PC seems to have no effect. The update seems to be totally arbitary
