When someone sends me a text message with photos, etc., I receive only the message "get media content now." When I tap on that, it says "getting media content," but nothing happens. I can do this a dozen times- still the same cycle. Any suggestions?

There are some good suggestions on here, but I'll tell you what just worked for me. I have a Windows Phone HTC 7. Was getting the media content message and realized it was only happening when my phone was using my home WIFI connection. When I turned it off under the settings icon on the phone the messages with pictures (also extra long messages from people with certain phone carriers) came through just fine. Hope this helps someone.

Text messages that have a picture attached are also called MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) messages. I would check if you have MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) enabled by your mobile operator.
Also there might be a problem with the MMS configuration on your device (there is no UI for end user to check) - what device are you using in what network? Is it open-market or branded device?
Also you need to have proper configuration for MMS service in your phone, see this thread about the possible issue with MMS configuration on branded phones:

I was having the same issue. Won't download on WIFI, turned it off and turned on mobile data. Downloaded with no problem.
None of the above suggestions helped me on my Lumia 735.
I've been battling the "Get Media Content" with the Messaging app on my Lumia 735 for quite awhile. The message also provides a "Download" link I can click and then the message downloads. I just figured the Lumia 735 had a poor antenna. Then 2 days ago I dropped my phone. I opened it and everything appeared OK but as the day went on I realized I wasn't getting any messages. I tried to send a message and got a message that it couldn't connect. I tried to call someone and got a similar message. Using another phone I asked someone to send me a message and call me and found I couldn't receive messages or calls.
I powered it off, removed battery, re-installed battery and restarted but still no luck. I did the same thing again only after removing the battery I removed both the SIM card and my extra memory card and then re-inserted them and that not only fixed the message & calling problem but also the "Get Media Content" problem. My guess is the SIM card must have had a contact issue and dropping it made it worse but removing and re-inserting resolved it.
Actually the Lumia 735 is working better that it every did.
In fact you don't have to turn the WiFi off, you just have to turn data on. On my old Windows 8.1 phone, you can do this under "Connectivity Tiles" (swipe home screen to left to get apps) then "mobile network" then switch data connection to "on."
