Green check marks on desktop icons

I like to think that the amount of carefully detailed thought I've put into my posts would imply otherwise.

I don't know if replying to my own post is bad form, but there's a thread herethat might explain what's going on.

I've just checked my registry and I appear to have two sets of OneDrive ovelays:

      OneDrive1 ~       OneDrive5

(i.e. with six leading spaces before the word OneDrive) and

 OneDrive1 ~  OneDrive6

(Just one leading space, and six of them, rather than five).

These are in addition to three keys for adobe and two others that I assume are used by Windows (EnhancedStorageShell and Offline Files)

I'm wondering if it mght be worth completely uninstalling OneDrive, manually deleting any leftover overlays in the registry, and then reinstalling it.

I don't use Norton 360 and I have the same problem. I do use Norton Security, so I asked them about the problem. They replied:

This is not caused by Norton (Norton backup overlays are white check marks in a green square on the lower left part of the icon).  What you are seeing are possibly related to Microsoft OneDrive or some other program.

So back to Microsoft. What about OneDrive?

FYI: Much less frequently a different symbol replaces the shortcut arrows on the icons. Once they were all replaced with red Xs. When I looked at them, they suddenly changed back to shortcut arrows.

Suddenly all my desktop icons have green check marks on them.  What does it mean?  How do I fix them?

Hi, I had the same issue with the "green check marks" suddenly appearing on all my icons/thumbnails as well. Here is the way that I figured out how to remove them, or at least what had worked for me... 

1. Open Windows File Explorer
2. Click on the "View" tab at the top
3. Click on the "Options" setting to "change folder and search options"
4. Once the "Folder Options" box opens, click the "View" tab inside of it.
5. Under the "Advanced settings," search below "Files and Folders" and uncheck the box next to "Display file icon on thumbnails"
6. Click the "Apply to Folders" button toward the top of the "Folder Options" box, and the "Apply" button at the bottom of it; Then click the "OK" button to close the "Folder Options" box.

"Green check marks" should be gone.
